The Other UK Esprit Discussion Group
Discussion
Guys,
Every so often I just remind new PistonHead Esprit owners that there is another source of information, chat, advice, meetings and all other maters relating to owning and running an Esprit in the UK.
Go to :
http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/UKLotusEsprit
Yahoo Egroup membership is current 562 . I think Pistonheads has about 50 Esprit members currently registered. For the best of both cultures I would highly recommend being a member of both groups.

Hi Dermot, I find the other forum a bit of a nightmare finding my way around it. As useful info there is on there, I just don't like the visual layout of it. Bits and peices of thread everywhere. If they could sort a more user friendly layout like this one, I would go there more often.

The other groups are fine as long as you sort through the clutter.
I also belong to the Turbo Esprit List.
I have many friends there. I use both list and this forum, I have many off list chats about Esprit's via email with the old timers of the list.
I find that this forum is much like how the old Turbo Esprit list used to be like in the old days before it got so large and sometimes strange. A tight knit group of many 4 cyl owners who trust each others expertise who have gained knowledge by actual hands on experience.
On the list when it got to over 1000+ members I have gotten into banter with people who claimed extensive knowledge only to find they based their information from a turbo Toyota or some other car, some even had multiple screen names and started a near riots on list.
Also a while ago the other list membership had shifted a little from the hands on DIY type person who owned the 4 cyl cars to a increase in V8 owners who do not work on their own cars. Many are still under warranty or who do not have the inclination to work on their own cars except for a few individuals.
Nothing really wrong with these V8 owners as they are still very nice people. But I enjoy a lively banter about the inner working of the car and the opportunity to learn from others.
I can only take so much about what the best wax or motor oil to use.
This forum has become a very good place with frequent posts. It is a much different place than a couple years ago when it would only recieve a post once a week or so.
Much thanks to Jim, Robert, Sanj, KFM, Ernest and others who's info is of great value. I like the feel of a smaller well sorted group which one can trusted to supply reliable info.
I have not visited the UK Yahoo site but many tell me it is very good.

Hi Calvin,
I also belong on the TE list and tend to agree with much of what you've said.... ie, long series of posts about oil, etc. However, I'll take a little offense to grouping all of the V8 owners together :-)
Yes, I own a 2000 V8, yes it is still under warranty. However, I perform ALL of the scheduled services myself and only use the dealer for necessary warranty work (which has been pretty extensive). I have also fixed many warranty issues myself as the timing to get into the dealer was 2+ weeks. These include dropping the entire front section to repair the radiator, side mirrors, exhaust rattles, AC leaks (new compressor via warranty was leaking), water pump, battery (yea, it died too), etc.
So give some of us V8 owners a little credit.... please.

I did give credit to the few V8 owners by adding the line "except for few individuals". I did not name them but besides you the only other people I know who work on their own cars are Marsala, Johan, and Guy (who is way beyond just about everyone I know of).
I'm sure there are more than just them but they are the ones that comes to mind.
More people will eventually work on them as the price dips a bit on the V8's and more hobby people get their hands on them. (It was that way when the FI 4 cyl turbos were new).
It's okay if one does not work on their own car, I can chat with them and I do not disrespect them for it. I just have more in common and enjoy the car banter a bit more with the DIY people.
Usually if one knows how to repair, one knows how it breaks or gets worn, if one knows how it breaks or gets worn, one knows the symptoms. That is the info I am after. To adjust or correct before failure. With our cars whats costs in many cases is not the primary failure but the 2nd and 3rd order failures caused by the primary.
I suspect that if there was a large gathering of V8 people, you, Marsala, Johan, Guy and few others would be off to the side having a nice chat.

I can't quite follow the posting on The Other site.
This forum seems so easy to use by comparison.
I also feel quite at home here, which is strange, because it is quite a cosmopolitan place.... I expect that I am in a minority here, being a Limey amongst so many Yanks and Anzacs.
I like the handy DIY attitude in here. My Esprit has an almost full Lotus Service record, but it is now a far better car following sensible upgrades to the clutch, gear linkage etc, all of which were carried out following tips and advice found on here.
Cheers, to all of you, wherever you may be.

I try to keep up with all three lists and one for my local area. This list has its own personality with what are long-term lotus owners and also many who have them as daily drivers. This was also the list that helped me decide to get my car and which year. Great advice I might add.
I like to work on my car as I love to find out more about how it is able to provide such great performance. Lotus is an amazing design group and the car is always surprising me with creative solutions. I only wish the parts were cheaper and I had more time so I could do more mods.

The Yahoo egroups can be configured for you to look at the messages using a internet browser, get a daily email of the days postings or individual emails as they are posted on the group.
If you send me your yahoo user name off line I can set it to whatever you prefer if you can't manage to do it yourself.
The colour scheme that bowser users see is due to me, I change it from time to time when i get bored with the colour scheme.
My original posting was to make sure that everyone is kept informed about existance the UK Yahoo egroup list. What you decide if your choice... my own recommendation would be for you to regularly look at:
PistonHeads Esprit list
www.pistonheads.com/lotus/
UK Esprit Egroup
http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/UKLotusEsprit
TurboEsprit Group
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/turboesprit
Lotus EspritWorld

there is also the BBS list which gets a lot of Elise traffic but very little Esprit
