Yesterday I drove up Bluebell Hill heading from Maidstone to Chatham, turning off at the top to join the M2.

The road is a dual carriageway therefore if there are no speed limit signs the national limit would apply.

However towards the top the speed limit drops to 50mph, and this is clearly identified by speed limit signs. However within 50 yards of the 50mph limit signs are signs showing 40 (and they are of the legal type). But no one has covered the permament 50mph signs, and on occasions there were 40mph signs right next to 50mph ones.

On the exit slip road the permament speed limit drops from 50mph to 40mph and this is signed. However there are also temporary signs showing 30mph.

Later in the day I bought a copy of the Medway Standard which said that the "Kent Safety Partnership" would be checking speeds through these roadworks. So what limit would they be enforcing and could ine get off any speed upto the national limit on the gorunds of confusion!

Incidentially this is a theoritical question as I stuck to the lower limit.

I would suggest that you could probably get away with the higher one as the lower ones are probably temporary signs. However, I would not recommend anyone try it.
