POLICE in the Scarborough area have launched a concealed crackdown on speeding drivers.
Officers are using an unmarked white van packed with laser equipment to help catch motorists on video camera.
The Pro Laser 3 Infrared Lindar System is installed in a Citroen Dispatch van, which will be parked at the side of the road in various locations.
It will film motorists and record vehicle speeds as part of the festive anti- drink drive campaign.
But it will still be deployed to catch drivers after the campaign is over.
Traffic officer Dave Burlingham, who is responsible for operating the system, said: "It will be at known accident-problem roads and where we have problems with speed.
"If the speed is below what has been set on the machine nothing happens but if the vehicle is doing more than what has been set, the machine bleeps a warning.
"When we get back to the office we go through the video and get the details of offences."
Notices of prosecution will then be sent out to the owners of any vehicle caught on the camera, which should produce a clear enough picture to recognise the driver. Previously, some drivers, including police officers in other parts of the country, have declined to admit that they were the speeding drivers.
The equipment was used on the A165, near Cayton Bay, to detect speeding drivers when officers carried out 32 breath tests between 9pm and 11pm.
None of them proved positive.
Mr Burlingham revealed the new equipment would continue to be used in the Scarborough area.
He said: "As well as the large number of cars already caught exceeding the speed limit, drivers of vans such as Ford Transit and Mercedes Sprinter are not aware that their speed limit is different to that of a car.
"On a single carriageway road the speed is 50mph, not 60mph, on a duel carriageway it's 60mph, and on a motorway it's 70mph. If it is not a car-derived van it is required to be driven at the lesser speeds.''
Sgt Pete Wood, of the road policing group in Scarborough, said what the police have named as Operation Helical 2 was proving a big success. There have been 342 breath tests in the whole of the eastern policing area., with four people caught.
He said: "Of this total four proved positive and there was one refusal which is a separate offence. A couple had some level of alcohol but were not over the prescribed limit."
Officers have the power to carry out a breath test if they suspect the driver to have been drinking or at the scene of an accident.
Sgt Wood said: "I think at this time of year it is more the opportunity to drink drive. People are going out and, because of the bad weather, people don't want to walk home.
"There is more temptation drink drive and people have an impression that it's never going to happen to them. Fortunately more people do get caught. They consider themselves to be competent drivers. Reactions are slower and it affects hand eye coordination they won't re
act in the same way."

Usually stationary with back doors open, and video camera set up.Records every passing vehicle, but does have speed trigger set above legal limit.Seems reasonably sensible to me. As soon as you spot it, slow down to limit ( for those who exceeding it
) and you will not get done.
