Selector shaft on LT77

One day I went to a race track to enjoy my Griffith. I was doing my first practice laps when it became more and more difficult to select 3rd gear. In the end I just couldn't. Second and fourth was all I could manage so I abandoned the day at the track and headed for home. Turning out of the gates in 2nd gear I went to change into 4th .... and couldn't. I was stuck in 2nd and a normal hour's drive home. It took a little longer than an hour on this occasion! Oh the ignominy.

I've discovered that a bolt had fallen out of the rear of a selector shaft. From what I can gather this is just a bolt and a thick flat washer. Is this correct and are there any further precautions worth taking to prevent a recurrence?
