next question, satnav... connected drive...

As you may have gathered I'm in the process of speccing a 335d touring.. I'm very used to tomtom and very happy with my newish 520 (thats tomtom 520 not bmw).

I have to have bluetooth so thats already on the list.

So...pro satnav which is about £1900, give me satnav, idrive and a few other bits including 'connected drive' which looks a little like a bit of a browser....

Can anyone tell me...

Is it a real browser, ie will I be able to get my email on it (outlook webmail)?

Which network is it on?

Is BMW satnav as good as the current version of tomtom?

Is it worth it?

hello mate ive got sat nav professional on my z4m, i havent used it YET, but i did do alittle test and personally i found it lacked the tomtoms accuracy BUT connected drive makes life very eay, you can send pois from google, sends locations, destinations straight to the car, when it pings up in the car then it will navigate you to a exact area, im very much looking forward to putting my pro nav system to the test on along journey, its got it own 118 like service included with connected drive. imo its a worthwhile investment and im quite impressed with mine, i still havent mastered all the features!!

With Connected drive you’ll get:

- the news
- the weather (real time)
- traffic information beyond RTC (real time, at least in Germany, not sure about the UK)
- additional information about your target/ current position (ie. Restaurants etc. – more content with connected drive/ automatic updates beyond the dvd)
- all the on board diagnostics/ quick fixes
- service reminder and “booking in of the car” – your stealer calls you to make an appointment (reminder mot etc.)
- you get an foc operator (Normal phone operator plus i.e. where’s the next post box – they know your position and send you the data to your sat nav – all foc)
- the google browser is basically like the yellow pages (with direct feed into satnav)
- you can send destinations from your pc (google mapy) to your car
- you can forward your emails to the car
- you can send sms
- the supported networks you’ll find on the connected drive website

This is for the German ECE version – UK versions may differ!
Over here there’s currently an offer for BMW Online: 250€ for 36 months. Would imagine BMW Uk do something similar!?

Satnav itself probably not as good as your tomtom (at least not as fast) – what I like about it is that it is an integrated system which makes it quite comfortable. It is expensive, but I wouldn’t go without it.

You can link in external mailboxes (pop3, IMAP, IMAP-SSL) into your bmw account. Haven't done that myself, but just checked again in my connected drive portal. You have all the usual mailaccount options (filters etc.).
