Can anyone shed any light on why i seem to have a continual noise like the petrol pump sounds when you first start the engine.

The pump gets noisy if the filter is choked,if thats any use,it may be the pump failing also, you need to investigate further.

You say it's noisy when you first start the engine. Does the noise stop?

You're not referring to the fuel pumping priming before the engine starts are you? TADTS.

Mine gets louder when the petrol level gets really low - as though it's having to scavenge for it

Are you sure the primary noise is not coming from the tank?

Very occasionally and immediately AFTER start up, mine emits various high pitched tones that change in level every couple of seconds or so for about 10 seconds.

Every so often this is accompanied by other sounds like sucking up the dregs from an empty bottle with a straw! Then everything returns to normal (that low key reassuring background hum). Only happens when warm, or at least not on the first start of the day.

Happened from the day I bought the car (9 months ago) and everything runs perfectly - never missed a beat, never failed to fire first time and I rarely let the fuel get below 1/4 (indicated!) I've never run the tank dry. I've no idea what it is but feel I should be fitting a new pump. Nick.

i think you will find its normal for some slight noise from the pump , like most things you only notice it more when you know its there. think about something els and it will soon fade out of your hearing.
