maserati ownership
Discussion
hi everyone
i currently own a tvr t350 and now considering the need for more seats.Thought of owning a maser since childhood so perhaps now may be the time. This has probably been done to death but could i ask for general advice on the usual issues of ownership of say the coupe version? i.e running/service costs, stuff that 'may' go wrong...though maybe not unsurprisingly the tiv has been fantastic..i'd be looking for a second hand by the way
thanks in advance-edited

having only just bought a GS I'm not particularly qualified to answer this but from my research about 3k/year should cover general running costs & by all accounts the cars are pretty fettled without too many major issues. Electricals, clutch wear & the F1 pump on CC cars seem to be the main culprits.

like everything it's dependent on budget.
if you are wanting to get in at the bottom end of the market i.e sub £20k then i'd leave it until you can spend more as you'll be likely to spoil the dreams you had.
i would suggest as later plate gransport as you can afford as the later the better put together. if you're think early 4200 then try to go for 04 or later and regardless of that make sure you have a good drive in a few as you'll then get the feel for when you find a good one.
taking disc's, pads, clutches out of the running costs then expect to pay £1000 every other year and £2000 every other year when doing 10k per annum. major services are dependent on mileages and normally every other year.

I was looking at T350s before I bought my '04 4200 - would possibly be interested in a p/ex? Best to get out and drive a few - 3200s, 4200s and GranSports if your budget allows.
£17k will see you into a good private low mile 3200GTA, £28k into a '04 4200 and £38k for a GranSport. Dealers tend to add £3-5k. A warranty is pretty much essential - 3200s suffer from the most niggles.
I would buy the most sorted car you can - i.e. major service done - discs, pads, tyres, clutch etc - you could well be looking at £5k in a year otherwise.

For what is worth, in my prev 4200 got a problem with the steering rack (which meant it had to be replaced); issues with rattling (both in the 4200 and GS, not uncommon); flaky air vents (replaced under warranty); faulty rear strut on the 4200 (ditto); rear rubber bushings replaced on the 4200 (ditto); fuel pump wiring chaffed by improper mounting at Maserati (work done by wicked1, aka Mathew, at Giallo); and ECU fart (which meant complete reprogramming) on the GS (warranty work as well...)
I need to get the GS in now for the rattling, some knocking noise on the front side, and to re-check the TCU. But that's because I'm a bit anal with the car, and want it to be always in 110% condition.
Apart from those inconveniences, both cars have put a smile on my face everyday...
But you need to be prepared. Running these babies with a tight budget is a no-no.

Went from a Cerbera Speed Six to a 3200 GTA, via an E30 M3. So far, so good. Pleased with the presence it has, lovely engine note, great interior, and so far no serious problems. Just had a large 64k (the largest one it can have, apparently) service, and also had a suspension squeak rectified, plus mended a leaking PAS hose. I did miss the pops and bangs of my Cerb when it went, and so far am more than happy with my 3200 as a replacement. Good luck.
