Cutting Out Update - Alarm ???
Discussion
Following on from here: (cutting out problem) www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=46196&f=8&h=0
I got hold of a replacement coil, dizzy cap, and rotor arm (many thanks TVR-Tim) and fitted them on Tuesday along with my new Magnecor leads and new plug adaptors (thanks Tim at ACT). I also cleaned the stepper motor while I was at it (see other new thread). While I had my head under the bonnet the alarm siren decided to give a quick blast! It did this a couple of times while I was assembling the new leads to the cap later on too. I thought I would try "arming" and "dis-arming" the alarm to see if it would settle. When I armed it the alarm siren went off fully! Dis-arming shut it off, but arming it again only set the siren off. Is this the cutting-out problem? Anyhow, I got all the sparks back together and went for a short spin. The car didn't cut out during this short (about 6-8 miles) jaunt, but on constant throttle the revs are all aver the place - indicated by the tacho, and you can hear it. Is it just a tune required?
Today - back to the alarm, to stop it "whooping" every so often I disconnected it! - and it didn't go off! Is this right? Could this be causing the car to cut out intermittently - and be reluctant to start?
Any ideas?

Hi,
Had a very similar problem when I had my Chim 4.0. I had a new alarm siren fitted and the fault was cured.

Matt, did the car keep cutting out? Or was it just this once. How did you know it was the siren? Did you get an Alarm expert out? This afternoon I heard my siren give a couple of "whoops" - and it's sitting on the parcel shelf of the car! so I reckon it's got a problem. I have a mobile alarm guy coming out to see me tomorrow morning. Hope it's a simple as that.

Alarm man came and confimed siren is up the swaney. Replacement Meta siren not available but he can wire in an alternative direct from the control unit. However this is probably an independant problem and unlikely to be the cause of the cutting-out.
What he did find though was a dodgy connection to the ignition control module at the side of the distrib. One of the terminals had been arcing badly - and with the engine running he wiggled it about and the engine died. He wired in new terminals to the housing and refitted. The car actually sounded better! - more even running (or was it what I wanted to hear?). I need to run the car for a distance to see if it's cured then order a new siren. Or go for a new system? But we are off now for an away-from-it-all break for the weekend. I'll update this on Monday after giving the car a run out.
