Another recommendation for that. Can you get it for £150 though? If you can its the one to buy, IMO.

I intend to get one of these next week, hopefully the prices may drop a little after Christmas but at the moment there`s some reasonable deals about.

I`ve been keeping my eye on here

£137 at both Halfords and Dixons but prices seem to change every other day smile

Garmin 200W/250W, this years Tom Toms are notorious for being temperamental (according Halfords who tell me they've had numerous returned).

Ignore them. Halfords must have some kind of deal with Garmin, I know several people who have gone it to buy sat nav systems, and have been told they all have problems bar Garmin.

When we went to buy ours, I asked for a Tom Tom, and he came back with a Garmin, saying they hadn't got any Tom Tom's. I pointed to shelf full of display boxes and he looked about as gormless as most Halfords spotty oiks and asked if we wanted the Garmin.

My respose was a very turse, 'If I wanted the Garmin, I would have asked for it, wouldn't I?' and walked out...

I can recommend the Navman S50. Got one today for £149.96 at PC World. Its extremely well made and the navigation pages are very logical... it also fired up in about 60 secs straight out of the box in the car park thumbup

You may get it slightly cheaper on line, but I needed it today as I am off at 0700 tomorrow on a complicated drive to any area I don't know! wobble

Was put off TomTom because every Forum seems to be full of threads like "TomTom does not work..please help" etc wink

Edited to add: sorry, just read original post again. If you want Europe then get the S70, same unit as the S50 but with Europe included.... only £30 more

As Garmin seem to be the choice for most of the world's military I figure that they'll get me to the shops.

I'd not fancy our Cruise missiles being guided by Tom Toms that need reasonably frequent re-setting... smile

I too eventually went for one of these over a Tom Tom. After reading various reveiws of both the Garmin 250 and the Tom Tom there was vertually nothing to choose from so went to Halfords to look and play with both. As my wife will be using it to I had to take in her opinion but we both decided straight away that the Garmin was the one for us.

Then went to Currys and bought if for £16 cheaper than Halfords, as Halfords wouldn`t price match or do any sort of a deal.

I'm also in this exact dilemma - want a basic(ish) Sat Nav with European mapping and its coming down to the TomTom One V3 Europe, which I found easier to user and nicer to look at, or the Garmin Nuvi 250 which Halfords seem to want me to buy and the missus seemed to prefer - I also got the spiel about the military using them and that they only get 4% returns on Garmin compared to 9% returns on TomTom!

To be fair, the Garmin did seem to calculate the route quicker but I found the TomTom to be more intuitive to use.

Amazon currently have the Garmin 250 for £115, compared to around £140 for the TomTom which isn't a massive saving, but better than nothing!

One question - speed cameras! Do both units come with them pre-loaded and can you update for free?

Anyone with any experience of both?

Cheers!

The Garmin 250 has a months speed cameras and then it's £29.99 per year, but they are pre-loaded anyway. You can probably load them from a free database as POI anyway, I haven't looked.

Garmin is well known for having better routes than it's competitors, and they are a bit like the Apple of the GPS world - it just works with no bugs. You never have to reset it.

I just got a 250 from Halfords for £123, primarily because I want to do a rather large trip around SE Asia later this year and TomTom just don't have the maps for many of the countries. Additionally there is a lot more support for Garmin in the mapping community. (although this won't interest most users)

I am very impressed by it, the satellite reception seems very good, even works inside our flat and it virtually gets a signal instantaneously when you turn it on.

It's also not just the military they make them for, they are a big supplier to the aviation and marine industries.

Right, I might go order a 250 now then - can always send it back if it's rubbish, I guess!

how about for zero pounds...

does she have a mobile phone on contract - near tje end of...

I upgraded last week to a nokia 6110 navigator phone.
it is a full STAND alone sat nav, (ie maps - uk are preinstalled)
uses route 66 sat nav software...

it is as good as (better) than my wifes standard fit satnav (grand voyager - which is very good) and as good as my fathers tom tom..

of course the screen is a bit smaller and the buttons a little bit fiddly - it is a small mobile phone.

but I got IT FREE.

I'm only on anytime 75 (£20 contract) which was also reduced to £10 to match virgin...

HOW DO VODAFONE make any money

eseriously over the moon with a great new gadget, for free, ie mp3, phone, sat nav, radio, video player, web b rowser, etc,etc for nothing.

B

for got to mention 2meg camera with flash as well. wink

Garmin 250 here. Bought it for my techno illiterate wife and she rates it highly so it must be easy to use.

Worked pefectly around Belgium and France recently...like the size, touch screen and camera alerts.

Good value at £150 or less.
