It's a con fallen for by morons.

Reminds me of being in a friend's house. His dad had a certificate saying that he was in the "league of distinguished people".

I got one of those letters too - I am not sure it is a con as such. They are obviously trying to make money but I wouldn't say it's a con.

I suppose it depends on what you mean by a con. I'm sure they'll do what they claim they are going to do: Put the listing in a worthless book bought only by those gullible enough to want to be listed themselves. Would you say those people who sell X-Box boxes on ebay are con artists?

If it's the real 'Who's Who' then you're honoured, as it's a directory of the rich, famous and notable going back maybe 100 years.

If as they say, 'a place can't be bought', then they can hardly con you out of any money!

The company is Who's Who Publishing Ltd, has published 26 titles to date, selling 10's of thousands of copies around the world, and it's not a con as no money is required,to appear in the directories. All information is gathered from Companies House and is in the public domain. Full info appears on the website and the selection criteria means that over half a million company directors are whittled down to less than 19,000. If it were a con, it would seem better to mailshot the whole half a million Directors and see who is gullible enough to buy it!

I would love to see the criteria used to "whittle down" to 19k, because I'm in that 19k and nobody would be interested in reading about my "achievements"

Vanity publishing, not illegal and not strictly a con but clearly relies on the gullible.

Mr Publisher, I couldn't find the information but does the book contain anything but the information submitted to companies house? Is there any original researched material on those listed?

Does Companies House not have some kind of rules against using their data in this way?

In my opinion, you're trading off the name of the "real" Who's Who. Hence why some people think it's a bit of a con. Maybe if you printed "We are not affiliated with the Who's Who that has been published since 1849" then people would be less upset. smile

I was selected for the Young Entrepreneurs one, because I am a director of my Dad's company, which I have approximately 0% to do with on a day to day basis. Seems like there is a bit more whittling needed...
