Contentious issue, I know so let's not get into which brand is better than the other and plasma vs wire etc.

Given that my wagon is around 2.5 tonnes, what should I be looking for as far as winch specifications go? I've got my eye on a couple winches rated at 12000lbs (which is about 5.5 tonnes). Would that be useful pulling power or do I need something with a higher rating?
How much grunt is needed to recover a stuck and dead 2.5 tonne wagon?

A 9000lb winch will be fine.

In our winch challenges i used to either use an 8274 up-front or a warn xp95000.

Then on the back either a warn xd9000 or a husky or another 8274.

I would go with Its a yellow. Go for the best quality 9000 or 9.5 you can afford. If you are in real mire, you'll be using a snatch block doubling it any way. If that isn't working you'll need another vehicle anyway that will be well stuck.

Go for a Warn if you can.

I run an 8274 on the front and a 9.5xp on the rear.
