Hello all

I have a query regarding the identification of Chimaera motors.

Mine has all the external appearances of a 5.0 litre, and certainly goes like one. The stamp, however, is unusual. It has a prefix of 47A090 rather than the usual (I believe) 37A50P.

Does anyone know how I might identify the origin and authenticity of the motor, or whom I might contact to do this?

Cheers
M

47A is just the later 4.0/4.6 xbolted block casting IIRC

Mines an S46D and is a late model X bolted 4.6 block with crank sensor hole. Seeing as the bore is the same for all the engines surely you wouldn't be able to tell from the block no.?

Mine's a cross-bolted motor, 1999 vintage but begins 37A...

Where did the car come from? Is it possible it's from Malaysia?

On my motor the car has the stamp but I can't see id on the engine itself. Is this usual?

It's on the block under the cylinder head. Not sure where else.

Is it easy to see from above, as I'm sure it should be on a flat surface on the block facing up, that the head sits on

Only if the heads are off! Not sure if it's anywhere else on the block.

Yes, mine is a Malaysian car.

The number is difficult to see, but may be found stamped on the block below the exhaust headers on the left hand (passenger) side about where the dipstick is. My mechanic needed a light and a mirror to read it properly, and could only tell me the prefix denotes a later-built engine to the 37A etc.

I've also noted some stamping on the front face of the same side of the block, but couldn't make out whether it's also the engine number.

Since you asked Candy I looked up, & Marki reckons the 47A is the LR 3.9 (37A 3.5), there is no mention of difference between the 3.9 pre-serp & serp and the 4.0/4.6s are different numbers. TVR & Morgan appear in all guises according to his list.

Dave
ETA: Contact TVRPower, they may be able to tell you the engine spec, the front of the head also carries their numbers wink
