Any advice on 6-series?

Thinking of purchasing a 1-2 year old 6 series in Feb. Coupe or Convertible doesn't matter. Black with cream leather would be the main consideration and owing to the massive fuel consumption of my wife's car, I'd be happy with the 630, rather than a 650, etc.

I'm buying second hand as I only want to keep the car a year before purchasing something else and I don't want to be shafted on the resale of a 12 month old car.

Any one got any useful advice or links on 1-2 yr old 630's, or what sort of money I would be looking at.

Any pointers gratefully received.

Its a nice engine but only in the right car. The 6 isnt it.

I would look for a slightly older 645i. The consumption is about the same but the performance is miles better. Look for a later one as they had "proper" bluetooth and nav. If you can find one with Logic 7 stereo its more than worth it.

I would definitely go for the 645ci over the 630i. In my experience the mileage is quite reasonable (and I'm in London) and when you need the performance it's right there.
I second everything said in getting one with as many options as poss. The Logic 7 is as good as any stereo I know of, and all add up to a great ride.

I'm sure the 630 is great, but i think i'm right in saying that prices for 645ci's are quite reasonable now over at Approved BMW..........

The current BMW CAR magazine has a buying guide to the 645 if you're keen.

Hi Martin. Funnily enough I was looking at second hand 645s as they are looking very good value. In your experience what rough MPG do you get and how are the other running costs ? Is the general reliability good or would I be buying a money pit with a 3 or 4 year old example ? Cheers, Mike. PS - sorry for all the questions !!

Enjoyed my 645i apart from the poor rear seat space and the runflats. They are getting cheap now with a good three year old 645i costing £30k. Mine was manual which I liked but auto is a much better resale choice.

my old man had the 645 and swapped to a 630 6 months ago, the difference is most noticeable low down but once it's up and running it's suprisingly perky, i've been driving it this week, done 1,000 miles in it and it's actually a good place to be, a big lump of a car but really easy to live, smooth and comfy, personally i'd forget the 645 and go for the 650 but if cost is a consideration that the 630 is an ok car

I live in London, and shamefully I get about 15-18mpg....
It is extremely reliable, but I will say that if you are getting the 645ci, then like most, the major problems should have been ironed out anyway...

I haven't been shy though in making sure certain things were 'switched on'...like: Voice control, mp3 cd playback, etc....these things even take the master technicians by surprise and they have to consult the bmw announcements to confirm what software patch does what etc....

There has been the odd technical gremlin, but to be fair, i'd expect it on any car that has so much. All very quickly sorted out though, have to say....

On the motorways, i can get 24-28mpg i reckon...depends who's accompanying me

Also, in addition, i tested the M6 about a month ago, and - for me, maybe not everybody - in a real world sense, I didn;t get the feeling that i NEEDED to change, if you know what I mean. Yes there is 507bhp, but these things are relative....Am very happy with the 645ci

I had forgotten about this thread - thanks for getting back to me.

Very interested to read your responses, sounds about as I had imagined. I still really like the 6 series (in particular the 645) but in the interim period the all-too-modest DD finances have been directed towards a house move so I'll be slumming it in the 130 for a while longer I fear.

Good to have something to lust after though !

Cheers. Aside from the looks it's a lovely piece of kit - the 3 litre engine is just a peach. So things could be worse I suppose !

Im with everyone else, the 645 is a peach. 630 is not really powerful enough for such a big car!

i'm thinking of a touring as a main car - keeping 645ci of course! - but wanted extra practicality (old people transportation etc..) AND ooomph...your view?
