I'm about to set off on a solo Atlantic row, and can't decide what, if any, decent camera equipment to take with me. I'm already taking a canon powershot a550, which will be more than adequate for most things, particularly considering any pictures I send back will have to be very heavily compressed, but I'm tempted to take an slr or something to try and get some really good photos.

The main problems are the battering that any equipment will take (so I don't want to take something especially expensive), the power that it'll use, and also how I'll store the photos.

Does anyone have any suggestions at all, or shall I just stick with powershot and do my best with that?

1. Peli case.
2. Solar charger (but you'll need that for keeping your radio /satphone batteries charged)

Is this an ideal case for one of those GPS linked cameras ?

Yep, peli case, or peli-alike. I have a Storm case that will fit my 1D with a lens attached. All this kind of things are waterproof and will float.

I've already got the solar panels sorted (they've got several other things to power as well), and the other camera came in a peli case (along with a pda and sat phone). I guess it's just a case of biting the bullet and going with one, sticking it in a peli case to keep it safe when it's not being used, and hope it survives everything else then, is it?

Are there any lenses that would deal better or worse with the conditions? (without spending ridiculous amounts of money)
