To avoid getting at the battery terminals is it possible to get reliable charging using the alternator +ve terminal (large one?) and finding a good earth. Advice please

Not really as it is very close indeed to parts of the engine and the potential to short out the battery with disasterious results. For a battery charger with 6-8A charging use the cigarette lighter socket. Failing that the safest place is direct on the battery.

You can charge the battery by running wires of suitable gauge just about anywhere you want. Starting / jumping is a different matter. Starter or alt-fuse terminal post to the front undertray, and the earth under the rad connected to a suitable connector may be the most 'convenient' type of solution. I have them in the undertray, footwell & boot, and find them useful as test points as well wink

On the other-hand if you want to be able to jump start you will require nice big anderson connectors and battery gauge cables, available from places like VWP, Steve Heaths Pub & Demonic Tweaks..

As Spendy says you make up some leads to anywhere in the car you like.

Or Steve Does some ready made clicky
at about £45

and Leven tech i believe do them as well clicky at about £75 yikes
