Decent Photographer Wanted.
Discussion
Needs to be Lanarkshire-ish area please.
As it says really. If the snow comes, I'm looking to get a few dramatic aerial shots from the helicopter. Forth road bridges/Glasgow/Loch Lomond/Stirling Castle/Oban way/New Lanark are the prime candidates, as they look awesome in the deep cold and covered in that almost blue/white tint snow we get up here.
I've tried this before last year, but neither me nor my mates have the sort of pro equipment/ability that gets decent results. Hence looking for someone who can donate his time to it. Experience of taking pics from inside 10,000 rivets rattling in formation a definate advantage.
Not looking to do anything commercial with the pics, just for my own memories box really.
Sure we could sort out Copyright or whatever you photography type's get concerned about like adults before we start. In short though, as I'm picking up the full tab for the helicopter (£440 per hour) I'd expect to be the 'owner' of them. If you wanted to contribute towards costs, then that would mean a different split on whose they are.
Drop me a PM if you think this is you I'm talking about and you fancy an afternoon jolly in one.
Merry Christmas one and all

How often do we get this ******* on this forum?
"Need a photographer, but can't/won't pay..." etc

the guys with the heli have prints made up and get digi files ect to do as they wish BUT can't sell them or use them for commerce.
i'd do it under the conditions above but i'm in manc so i guess thats no use.
anyone thinking about doing this and need some inspiration: http://www.wecommunic8.com/EarthFromTheAir/Gallery...

as it says that you are a property developer so any income from photography i hope you offer to the Tax office ..... see now i am on my soap box

as a full time Photographer i would do the job but alas i am in Cambridge however i would suggest that you ask at Edinburgh college Of Art 0131-221-6000
as most students in the final photographic year would have semi pro/pro gear and do it free just to have the shots in there book.
as regards copyright any Car magazine in the uk when booking you for a shoot will want to keep the copyright of you image included in the day rate fee that you get payed. if they are just buying one or two images from you they wont bother but if they book you for a day they will.
have a nice day

In fairness to the OP, although there's no direct payment - he is picking up the tab of a helicopter
Agreed, helis are not cheap to run a former colleague is learning to fly and it's very pricey and he's only on the little Robinson not the jet powered helis.
The OP sounds like a reasonable bloke and has stated up front there is no current plan for commercial use. If that happens in the future then it should be easy enough to agree a split that rewards the photogrpaher for their time / skill and also the OP for providing the opportunity / location.
I guess the OP wants to ensure that the pics are avilable for reprints to him / family at reasoanble prices rather than some of the reprint prices he may have run into in other parts of life e.g. weddings. That to me sounds very reasonable. If I were based up there I'd certainly love to give it a try.

Any self respecting professional photographer willing to shoot on the original terms is mad IMHO.
As it has nothing to do with me, and as I've poked my big nose in enough already, I'll bow out now

To those that see where I am coming from - thanks.
CVP has it spot on: the last thing I want is a situation where in 2 years time I want a blow up say of a particular shot for my daughters bedroom wall/office/garage whatever, for the photographer to then pull the sort of ‘reprint price’ stunt I went through with my wedding.
Also, as I said in the post, if a photographer doesn’t want to hand over the rights to them, then I have no problem with that – but he pays a share of cost towards the Heli. That’s fair. Any photographer who thinks it’s fair that someone else pays for the machine/fuel/landing fees/lunch etc (realistically it’ll cost me about £900 for the afternoon all in) but then get to keep the phot’s, all rights to them etc, doesn’t sound like the sort of person I’d want to share a cockpit with anyway TBH. Enough said. I’m not that sort of grasping prick in my personal life, and wouldn’t want to ‘contract’ (because that’s what it’d then be) anyone who is. For any amateur to try that stunt, then he really must need a head check.
As for the ‘"Need a photographer, but can't/won't pay..." etc allegation, well, if you’re a professional photographer, fine, give me a costing and I’ll look at it. No problem, and my lawyer will draw up a document over who owns what and away we’ll go. I could have done that at the start by picking up my Yellow Pages, but thats not the way I wanted to do it.
The way I wanted to go with this however, in the true spirit of Pistonheads, is if you’re an keen amateur who wants an amazing day out your never forget and the chance to do something different that'll enhance your skills, then let me know and we’ll sort it. I'd even try and get you a shot of your house if you like as an extra thank you. We both walk away at the end with a memory card full of shots, and I get to have them blown up/framed/whatever the hell I want with them in the future without having to pay another fee.
I think I’ll have spent enough money as it is to call that deal fair.

Why? I'm sure there is nothing sinister going on here and its a genuine offer but I'm not comfortable with photographers not being rewarded for their skills & time, and a helicopter flight is incidental - you cant get the shots without the chopper - its just a tool for the job. [/rantoff]

Amen brother!I might be a professional photographer, but if I was in the position to help out on your project, I would be more than happy to help out

Plus, think of the experience too

Good luck with it Chainguy

I am puzzled by wanting to own the images, but not do anything with them?! Why would you worry about then owning them? If it's just for your personal collection then does it matter?
Might it be to stop the photographer making money from the shots when the OP stumped up for the helicopter? If that's the case, then it seems fair.
Some comments being made on this thread seem to relate to "pros" or "semi-pros" not doing work without keeping copyright - note the OP didn't ask for a freebie from a "pro". He just wants a decent (presumeably means good) photographer.
Not all good photographers are Pros,
and certainly not all Pros are good photographers!

'Andy Morgan / Kenny P / Gus Gregory'
Never heard of them. I take it they are 'big time' pro's?
I'm not looking for pro's. And I'm sure as hell not EVO. I'm just a guy who flies looking for some guy who likes a) fast metal (hence why I'm asking on this site) and who b) is an amateur. Photography is not his day job.
I think I'm asking the impossible though.
I'm genuinely sorry if I've offendes anyone's sense of abilities/skills etc. I honestly never realised amateur photography was so precious (for want of a better word, not meant as an insult) about itself. I do a lot of amateur mechanics/engine design and building for people, and in that hobby, different feelings apply. Sorry to have misjudged this one.
I'll look in yellow pages and contract someone. Thanks for your time taken to reply though. If anyone is interested in seeing the final photo's, let me know and I'll get them hosted somewhere.
Edited because cant spell today for some reason!

Chainguy,
Don't hit the Yellow Pages just yet.
What you're offering is a superb opportunity for someone to have an cracking day out.
It's early days yet, the talented amateurs will be at work doing their day jobs at the moment
Give them a chance to form an orderly queue over the weekend
