SP12s - summer tyres...

OK, so if I bought a set of SP12s or similar, what tyres (and any change in sizes) should I get? Summer/amateur track use only.

I've got toyo T1R's on my SP12's, 225/35/18 up front and 255/35/18 on the rears. Drive it daily, fine in the wet, plenty grip in the dry, used them at the nurburgring and was happy with the grip in the sun and in the heavy rain.

I'm getting a cheapy runabout for work soon so think i'll try the toyo r888s next time as the car will be used less in poor conditions in the future.

Do those SP12's really make a big difference to the Orig. spiders,
thinking of getting a set.

SP12's are nice wheels. see my profile. Personally i would consider stiffer sidewalls and stiffer tread blocks. Goodyear eagle F1's, Bridgestone GDS3, or Michelin pilot sport if you have the budget. The Toyo's grip well, but a lot is lost in feel. IMHO

R888s would be my choice if you can get them in the size you want. Don't go for 255s all round, they will foul the body when the car is used on track (they do on the Sagaris front and rear)

R888s are better than people would have you belive in the wet, but they are a noisey raod tyre.

Dunlop SSR would have been my other choice but now no longer avaialable.

A company by the name of Sileverstone tyres do some good road legal track tyres too and they be worth a shot.

I agree with the above if you know there might be times that you will be out in the rain on them - because R888s having the best wet weather performance of all road legal track tyres on the market. However, if you know it's going to be 100% dry then you should also consider Yokohama AO48s which have a slightly better grip level on a dry track. The downside to this is that Yokos don't have such a good level of longevity though.

Swings and roundabouts really and it will come down to your wallet, but R888s and A048s are your main two choices. There's plenty of discussion about them over on seloc.org.
