Hello there guys,

I remember when I was seventeen I was fortunate to have a dad with money who bought me a honda nsr 250 mc 21 dry clutch model..... wow what a bike, Been young and stupid at those times and not really knowing much about bikes I remember pulling off for the first time and engageing the clutch only to hear what sounded like a BISCUIT TIN WITH NAILS IN, oddly the noise to me was beautiful and made the experience that more enjoyable. I remember pulling up at traffic lights only for some bloke to stick his head out the window and say... mate your bike sounds like somethings broken or falling out, little did he know the massive grin I had under my helmet as I pulled away with front wheel in the air.

I just wanted to find out from other readers what there experiences where, and oh if anyone is thinking... nsr 250 at 17 ... this was in south africa where those bikes are legal at that age. Im also curious why modern bikes like the fireblade and r1 and so on dont have dry clutches. I know ducatti have on there bikes.

thanks guys and I hope to hear from you all soon

My neighbour asked me 'what's wrong with your bike?' with regards to the noisy clutch (Ducati with open cover) I told him that it was a diesel - he seemed happy with the answer.

Dry clutches are often used for race bikes as they have less power loss and are easier to service, they do however wear much quicker and sound 'agricultural'.

hey thanks for your reply

mine had a open clutch case aswell, it does not take well to dusty areas and little stones. I remember going on a bike run one sunday only to be met by a gravel road.... BIG MISTAKE. I read that they only really use it on race bikes these days, its a pity because I find the noise fantatic.

cheers

Race Bikes...........and a lot of Harley-Davidson custom Bikes.
H-D had them as standard for a lot of years,
which was weird as they ran the dry clutches in the same case
as the primary chain, lubed by oil spray....................jester
But somehow it worked, sort of, mostly.
Today, all the V-Twin Bikes with open belt primary drives
are running dry clutches, rattling, yes,
but works fine with modern materials.
Cheers,
