In a car, M1 every time. Join it and sit there in a 70mph queue until you get to London, then its a 47mph queue till the M25.
A1 in a car is hideous, as its chocka with elephant races and people who are too scared to go on the proper M1 biggrin

Best bet? Ferry from Newcastle to Sweden, then ferry from Calais to Dover. You know it makes sense, and its only a teensy detour wink

Depends how fast is your usual cruise speed.

If you are hat-wearer, a vicar, think 80 mph
is dangerously fast or have trouble
keeping up with the lorries, pick the A1.

The speed cameras, two lane sections and the
roundabouts won't be a problem.

If you a member of the lane three only club,
and nothing ever overtakes you, by all means
choose the M1.

The M1 gets much quieter north of the M6 turnoff.
Expect to be undertaken if you drop below 90 mph.

Yep, you'd be a madman to chose the a1 by choice. Even if you were a vicar the elephant races would get you... At least they're getting rid of the roundabouts. And some of it is a bloody disgrace, I can think of parts that are really rather dangerous at a hundred leptons.

I'm driving almost all the dualed section tomorrow frown
