Hi
I took my 84 esprit turbo out for a run, as i was on the way back there were three loud backfires and it lost power a couple of times and then ground to a halt and it won't start again. The engine turns but won't catch.
Typical its just come back from the garage where they changed the ignition module and a few other things(£649.00)
any one got any ideas whats gon wrong this time

Matt,

Sorry to hear of your troubles. Since they did ignition work on the car, this area is the most suspect. The shop should be responsible for that. Perhaps something wasn't secured tightly and it moved seriously altering the timing.

However, had you not mentioned the ignition work, my initial reaction would have been that your mechanical timing has been upset, such as when the timing belt slips (did the shop change or retension the belt?). I still would not rule this out until you set the car at TDC and check the timing marks on the cam pulleys to see that they are aligned (use the push in 5th gear method to achieve this).

But, from your descrption one gets the impression that the car was ok between these episodes of lost power, which is more likely indicative of an ignition failure. Hope this helps. Happy Motoring!...Jim'85TE
