Tomtom map share, 12 months only!!!

If you are one of the few that can get tomtom map share, is it only for 12 months, if so then how much do they want you to pay for it after 12 months.
If you do have to pay, then how come people are helping tomtom to update their maps for them yet having to pay for the privilege of doing so, seems strange to me.
