Have been reading all about the 'Blackpool rot' issues as a prospective owner and there seems to be a consensus that 1997 and 1998 models seemed to have the least protective coating.

Was looking at an ad though for a 1999 Chim at TVR Power who quoted "Being a late model Chimaera, the chassis was coated with the latest powder coating treatment at the factory which is not prone to flaking like the earlier cars and does not need treating with waxoil"

Is this generally accpeted or just marketing hype?

I have a late 1999 Chim, which I'm pleased to say has had a cosseted past. After some 35k miles there are no signs of flaking or corrosion. I have had her for nearly two years and regularly waxoiled her and in doing so have had a good peek around, though it is close to impossible to inspect the outriggers on my model.

I have no idea about whether post-98 models were better coated, but to say that any TVR chassis doesn't require waxoyl or the like is complete rubbish.

If anyone trying to sell me a car sounded like they hadn't looked after the chassis, I wouldn't touch it with yours...

Tell that to Tyre Smoke who's 30,000 mile garaged V plate Cerb has just have to have a body off rebuild due to chassis corrosion.

I would suggest that is a load of cobblers. Plastic coating is a rubbish way to protect a chassis however well you do it.

I would say - forget about year and quality of coating. The main factors are how well the owner(s) have looked after the chassis and whether it has been an everyday use all year round car with an untreated chassis, or a cosseted weekend summer use only car.

My chassis is not waxoiled and the Chim has done 10K 99% dry miles. It's a 98. Chassis is perfect although the coating is chipped from stones behind the front wheels and there is surface rust where it's peeled slightly. Rub down and waxoil is next on the list of to do items.

My brother-in-laws 400 Chim is a 97 with waxoiling from 1 years old and 38K mainly dry summer miles. His chassis is also in perfect condition.

What he ^^^ said.
My 1999 Chim with 12K on the clock (6K mine since purchase Oct 2006) also 99% dry miles (London Thunder first wet drive) had a waxoline unprotected chassis which is in origional condition (save some stone chips).
Had it waxolined (the clear version) during 12K service in October.

Don't forget that even in a garage, rust can still be a problem.

^^^

I agree.

My garage is not attached to the house and the condensation that collects on the car at the moment is rather alarming.

Was considering getting a dehumidifier in there or some sort of 24/7 heater

If your garage is damp - this may be a better option than dehumidifiers and extractor fans etc. These also keep the dust off. I don't have one myself (as my garage is integral, heated, alarmed and carpeted!!), but my God father bought and used an indoor one on his Mk2 Jag that was stored in an appalling metal structure that was always running with water - had no problems at all.

Or if you fancy a cheap but effective option get some Moisture Mates from your local caravan store or Halfords - about a fiver each.

would they improve a whole garage?

its not that the garage is damp, but just that the metal bits of the car get so cold condensation forms

sorry for the thread derail!

Mine is a 97 on a P plate with 54k on the clock and driven in all weathers. I have the chassis checked and wax-oiled every year and have no problems at all.
As with all TVRs preventative maintenance is key and I see no reason why an early 93 car couldn't have a chassis as good as or better than one of the last off the line.
