Awaiting the delivery of her new Porsche in January my wife kindly bought me a Zymol polishing? kit for christmas.

It is a suitcase with some blue dusters in it, a couple of horse hair brushes and lots of bottles of stuff. It also has a tub of wax, a blue circular thing made from foam. Oh and a small tub of yellow waxy stuff.

I think she wants the car cleaning at some time. I know this cost a lot of money and think it must be for some one who knows what they are doing.

I'll probably work it all out but can some one who knows about these things tell me how often I should be doing this detailing thingy. I wash the car religiously every couple of days (using only cold water)it very rarely stops dirty but is used every day.

Andy the preparation work is the basis to a clean car. Having the right chemicals, a number of microfibre towels and Sonus Water magnets, plus the time. If once a month you give the car a really good clean, once every three a really good wax and once every six months use some clay and a polish plus sealent....the car will look wonderful. Just throw away and sponges, and use the two bucket method plus grid guards....get a decent wash mitt.

Andy, if you can list the bottles and tubs, we can help you get more of an understanding of what's used when, and for what purpose.
One of the bottles I suspect will be Bathe - which as the name suggests, if for washing the car with.
The cloths are to wipe or apply some products, and the foam is purely an applicator - all things to minimise the risk of putting swirls into the paintwork.

The wax applicator is ok, but if you want to apply the wax properly then you just can't beat bare hands. Sounds a bit over the top but works for me. You can get a good even coverage, work it in properly and from experience, gives the best results...

USE THE ZYMOL SPARINGLY, first time I did this took me three hours to get the stuff off. Car looked great afterwards though.

As previously stated use sparingly and the key to the process is the preparation. The wax is just the icing on the cake of all your hard work.
Have a look at http://www.vertar.com/zymol/ for details on what kit etc you have and there will be info on the products and how to use them. the Zymol.com homepage also has info.

best wishes

I've found the reverse, i started with some Zymol Concours by hand and it was an utter utter pig and nightmare to get off, you just can't get it on thin enough by hand.

I hated the removal so much, I bought Swissvax Best of Show instead as it was easier to work by hand.

The revelation came when I used an applicator pad with the Concours, far easier and used about 1/3 of the product I did by hand (ah so that is why Zymol say you must do it by hand! wink ).

I have since used Zymol Vintage by pad and had a far better experience than by hand.

I will go as far to say I shall never use a Zymol wax by hand in future, just cannot see any advantage.

Andy

Drop me an e-mail ( mark@morethanpolish .com) and I'll take you through what you've got and how to use the products.

I am an authorised Zymol Reseller (the kit didn't come from me though!).
