Anyone done the Oulton drift days?

I'm fairly confident with oversteer caused by pressing on in either wet or dry, currently in an E39 M5. First thing I do when I get in the car is switch off the TC.

However, I'm less confident in provoking drifts for 'fun' (in controlled situations, mind. Eg. coming up a deserted mountain into Verbier last summer, NOT around urban roundabouts in rush hour!) and would like to truly master the M5.

Is the drift day on a wet or dry track (or both)?

I assume I should expect a new set of rear tyres by the end of the day at any rate?

Are these days worthwhile or would I be better just doing another open pit day on track instead?

cheers

I am by no means all that knowledgeable about the subject, having only done a beginners Drift Academy day at Silverstone, but for what it's worth, I'd suggest giving something like this a go first (the Drift Academy day was in MX5s for the beginners course, 200SX for the level 2). That way you'll get to learn the techniques in a car in which everything will happen slower, and perhaps more importantly isn't yours (nor are the tyres). smile

The downside of doing it on an open pit lane track day is that to begin with you'll spin. Lots. And they won't be too keen on that on most track days. smile

The drift days at Oulton are on their Rally course not the circuit. They are an excellent way to gain experience and understand your car. The rally circuit is made from a special type of tarmac which offers very little grip and once they have covered it in water you can slide just about anything around. The most popular cars I have seen doing it are E46 M3 CSL's, this gives you an idea of what it's about. I would recommend it though, and it's not too harsh on the tyres so you shouldn't get through a set in a day, I think it depends on you though.
