Having been given a Meguairs polisher for XMAS I need some advice on what polishes and waxes to buy to use with it. I have a few litres of heavy duty bodyshop cutting compound which I have used with a standard rotary sander with bonnets etc but thats it. I have got a sacraficial car to practice on so where to begin?

Waxing is best done by hand...polishing is best done by a machine, but what car and what colour? This information dos make a difference re polishes and condition of paint.

Well the car I have to play with is an dragon green MKIII golf. My other cars are yellow and two are dark blue. I use Zymol concourse wax.

What on your sacrificial golf are you looking to achieve, swirl removal, scratch reduction, a deep wet look or wet sanding and respraying??

The wax is a very personal thing, so if you are happy with Zymol stick with it. Polishing I like to use Menzerna P091L

However 3M make some top class bodyshop products as do Meguiars Professional range.

The thing to remember with a rotary is to never burn the clearcoat and to always keep the rotary moving...dont concentrate on one sport for too long.

Here is an interesting guide to give you a start.

The Golf has a lot of oxidization on the bonnet and the doors. So removing that would be a first step. Then scratch removal. I will probably touch up a few areas of stone chips.

Menzerna can be a bit tempermental with ROs since they tend not to generate as much heat as rotaries.
That said, you should only need IP (Intensive Polish 85RD 3.02) and FF (Final Finish 85RD), but it wouldn't do any harm to have the 3M equivalents (Finesse It III & Ultrafina) in case you find the Menz playing up in the cold.
DoDo Lime Prime is also worth looking at, but if you are a Zymöl user, then HD Cleanse to remove polish residue and help create a wetter looking finish from the paint when the wax is put on.
LP will probably remove more than HD Cleanse, but it does have some mild abrasiveness to remove swirls and oxidation.
There's a non-abrasive version coming next year, which I'll be trying pre-production to see how well it works.
Of course, you could always just use a 50:50 solution of IPA and deionised water instead, but that's more for removing the fillers Meguiar's polishes #80 and #83 leave behind.
A good light source (Brinkmann) is useful to make sure all the swirls, etc have been removed at this stage, leaving you with a glassy/mirror-like surface to put the wax on.
