Engine weights

From the front page article on the C63 AMG:

"And despite the capacity, [the 6.2l engine] weighs in at 199kg, compared to the 202kg M3’s four-litre."

Is that really true? How can Merc be so far ahead BMW?

3 kg is hardly a huge weight advantage...

It is if you're also 2200cc larger in deplacement!

Bigger holes in the block mean less weight!

All that weight advantage is lost if the engine's too far forward in the chassis. Think of previous generation Audis that were nose heavy. What's the Merc's weight distribution? You can be sure BMW's is near 50/50.

The BMW has the flywheel included in the weight of the engine , the merc uses a auto box with a much heavier torque converter that is classed as being part of the gearbox and isnt included in the engines weight. If you removed the dual mass flywheel off the high revving BMW V8 it would be easily lighter than the "high revving" AMG chugger.

The M3's engine is much higher tech, which may well add to the weight. Think of an all alloy Rover V8 as a comparison - they weigh less than the 4 cylinder pinto engines that were in many early Sierras.
