Says it all really. I need, sorry want, a fun track day car for local tracks and occasional trip to the Ring. I've narrowed it down to MX5 and 3 series (E30 or E36). Budget £3k. I've driven a track prepped 318ti at the Ring and an unmolested MR2 at a couple of local track days. They both seemed like decent cars.

Any views?

Was the 318ti you drove at the ring the one from rent-a-racecar, in which case its not very modified, apart from being stripped out and cage fitted. Doing this would be well within your budget of £3k. Try to get one without a sunroof(or as bmw call it moonroof). There is always the option later on of putting in a larger engine from a m3/328 etc to get more power.

3 series all day long. Awesome cars for safe drifting and very fast when set up right. I'm about to sell my E36 325 track car (fully stripped with various mods) as I'm turning my M3 into my track machine instead. Drop me a line if you're interested - it's done 3 ring trips this year (dry times in the mid-9 mins which I think is great value for something so cheap) plus half-a-dozen track days and has never used a drop of oil or waterbiggrin. I just hope that my M3 turns out to be worth the extra money when I finally get it on track.

3 series. MX5 is two cylinders short. My E30 325 is just coming up on £3k spent productively, details in my profile.

Yes, it was that one. It wsn't very powerful so I do believe the the engine was unmodified. However, it did have uprated suspension and, I think, semi slicks.

Why have you switched to the M3? Did you feel that the 325 lacked power?
