Having very recently bought a 40D (and 24-105 lens), I realise I need a safe way to carry it around. I plan on buying a range of lenses (50mm, 100mm, 16-35mm, 100-400mm) over the next few months too.

So I thought that perhaps I should buy a small bag capable of carrying just the body plus 1/2 lenses and perhaps a flash. I also thought I'd buy a backpack type of bag to carry everything. Does that make sense in others' experiences?

Secondly, I reckon it's best to buy from a store (rather than online) so I can see the size and quality of bags. Any thoughts?

Finally, I live in Kent, work in the City, and will be going to Lakeside shopping centre tomorrow. Any recommendations on where to buy the bag(s) please?

Thanks smile

Can completely recommend the Lowepro MiniTrekker AW.

I have similar aspirations in terms of lenses, and bought this bag with the future in mind.

Excellent quality, great compartments and a waterproof cover should the weather go tits up!

Got mine for about £69. Try places like warehouseexpress.com, park cameras and another I can't remember. I think you would get ripped off from jessops etc. smile

Not had any other bags, so can't comment on this one vs them, but suffice to say that I don't think I'll be needing another bag for a LONG time! biggrin

Have a look here for some details re size, gear that will fit and other features.

Another vote for the LowePro Mini Trekker AW here...but the lenses you quote will be a tight fit. Mine is rammed..I carry a 1DmarkIIN with 100-400 attached, a 24-70L, a 100 Macro,a Sigma 12-24DGHSM, a 580EX Speedlight and a set of extension tubes. One more purchase will mean a new (bigger) bag too.

Martin.

Sorry to go off on a tangent, but those of you worried about your carry on luggage when travelling should check out the ThinkTank Airport International.

On a recent flight Bangkok -> Manchester"

Lowepro Computrekker here.

Takes my 20D with the 24-70, 100mm, 10-22 and 100-400 with a couple of pouches to spare on the inside. The flash and bits and pieces fits in the pouch on the outside and when/if I take my laptop it fits in the pouch nearest your back. Oh and the waterproof cover is underneath.

Can't go wrong...

I use Domke bags. Everything fits into a big one, and I have a small one also that fits just one body and a couple of lenses with bits 'n' bobs. Whatever you get, it's well worth taking all your gear to a decent dealer which has plenty of stock and physically seeing what fits best and is easiest to carry.

he hasn't got it all yet, so atm it'll fit in pretty much anything.

If the OP wades theough the aforementioned thread (64 pages! eek), there are lots of pictures detailing what others can fit into all types of bag. smile

I bought the computrekker AW when out in NY at B&H comparing them all against each other. It came down to the computrekker or mini trekker for my needs, but I went for the compu as it was only 10USD more, had an extra pouch for the laptop & better webbing (assuming I haven't got my bags muddled). Right now I've got a d300, sigma 10-20, 70-200, 18-200, 2x teleconv in there, and enough space for a flash + 50mm prime when I get them. Its a decent mid size bag. Its already chuffing heavy though!

I agree with your strategy on bags and plan similar. I intend to get a crumpler messenger bag type thing for when I don't want to carry everything nor advertise that I've got a camera.

I've got a Peli 1510 for the same reason. It's the maximum permitted carry on size, but also strong enough to go in the hold.

I have the same one (holding D70s / AF-S 18-70, also holding 50mm f/1.8, AF-S 55-200 VR, 70-300, and a Speedlite SB-600 with no drama). Also holds all your cables/chargers/memory cards, batteries and I had a camcorder in the top pocket on mine too. I have a smaller standard Lowepro camera bag which holds camera & 1 additional lens which is quite handy.

The only other thing I would wish for is a bag that doesn't obviously look like it's loaded with camera kit...

Slingshot is only one strap across your body. Its ok for lighter equipment/shorter trips, but not great for your body due to the uneven loading. Convenient though.

Its all a compromise, like everything photographic wink

I'd normally have my butler carry it, but he was off over Christmas.

Another vote for ThinkTank products; they are so cleverly thought out.
