Has anyone fitted a P6 rear axle to an MGB ?
I recently bought an incomplete project with what I initially thought was an SD1 rear axle, but it turns out that it is a 'live' axle from a P6, with the brake disks adjacent to the diff.
It 'seems' to fit OK, apart from the two torque arms to the rear which are hanging loose..and there doesn't seem to be anywhere to fit them...
If anyone can help it would be much appreciated - otherwise I'll have to fit the rear axle off a GT which I'm dismantling for a different restoration project (which has a good rear axle)
My second problem is space for a radiator - can I use the standard MGB rad, with electric fan - or do I have to fit a larger radiator ?? I don't feel that here's really going to be enough space..and if that's the case I'll steal the engine for my Cobra Replica, and fit all the mechanicals from my 76 BGT..

I take it you are trying a v8 conversion..?

Stick witht he v8 rad for now. AFAIK, the originals had no difference in rads between 1800 and v8. Get it all sorted and see how it runs, some people are lucky, others need rad work.

I would consider a recore of existing rad over a new one anyway, unless buying an aluminium rad. These are the boys, but at £500 are a little OTT unless you need one.

I'm not trying to do a V8 conversion - someone else has already done it - but not very well by the looks of it. I'm having to rely on SWMBO sending me photos - I'm away in Gulf of Mexico (dodging Tropical Storm "Claudette").
It's more the securing of the De-Dion rear axle which I'm concerned about, than the engine..
Can anyone help me ??

I think you would be best off posting a question on the B technical page on www.mgcars.org bulletin board.

Loads of traffic there and someone would be able to help. I have heard of a rear axle being used with discs, but not sure if P6 or not.

Thanks for the advice 'Buffalo' - I'll do that when I get home..
Just about to climb into a helicopter, for transfer to mexico City...hopefully home by tomorrow afternoon.

With a V8 if you have option go for Ali rad and Pacet fans otherwise any high ambient temp will become a problem.

Avoid using SD1 axles the std B is better option.

I really doubt you can fit the DeDion rear to a MGB, the whole P6 rear was designed to reduce the unsprung weight of the transmission by using the inherent strength of the P6 base unit as its anchor point.

You try that in a monocoque and you'd not only have the scuttle shake from hell but some serious handling problems.
