cleaning engine and underbody

I have an S3 and am wanting to clean the engine and underbody to prepare for repainting chassis etc.

I have 3 thoughts. 1. buying / hiring a steam cleaner 2. covering with 'Gunk' 3. paying a valeter.

Any advice greatfully recieved.

hi go for option 3 my engines on the floor and i still cant clean it properly as said pay the man and go to the bar

If you can trust the valeter and think he knows what he's doing then great, if not, dont let him anywhere near your P&J, especially with a steam cleaner... you have a lot of electricals around the engine area (connectors and sensors etc)which dont take kindly to a blast of superhot steam, so care is needed... the sort of care that in my experience is only exercised by an owner or a competant dealer that you can trust. Get the missuses marigolds and get underneath yourself for the full experience of TVR ownership

do it yourself, you know where the water is being sprayed! Dont use a steam cleaner, It buggers up the alloy finish. Gunk is perfectly fine.

Start to do it yourself like the rest of us and within a couple of hours you will be that pi##ed off you"ll end up in the pub. Continue with this most weekends during the winter months and come the summer approx 3 years after you started your car will be spotless and you will be attending alcoholics anonymous meetings every week,or as is in the manchester/cheshire area the 2nd tuesday of the month. And yes the meeting place is a pub.
