Not sure, it's 6 months old, does the camera report this?

Thanks

No it doesnt sadly, if (like mine) you've started at 000001 and not reset the pic counter then that wil tell you, or the guy should know roughly how many.

Typicaly in 6months it should be OK but he may have been a heavy user, its good for 50-80k or so.

You can buy a refurb (which is very likely to be brand new) 350D from Canon on eBay for under £200 delivered.

Silver or black, take your choice although black 350D's tend to sell for more (because they take better pictures of course rolleyes) and with 1 years warranty.

You can use the program linked below to look at detailed exif data from a sample shot taken with the camera. The total number of shutter actuations is near the bottom of the list.

Is that true of all of the Canon range?

I can understand the ability to reset the number of shots taken in a sequence, but not the number of shutter actuations.

There must be a count within the camera which is not reset-able by the user somewhere, or else Canon are laying themselves open to numerous 'it's only seen light use' warranty claims. So it surprises me that there are two counts.

If it is indeed the case that the user can reset the number of actuations visible to them, then it would be a case of sending the camera into a Canon service center to get the answer.

Thanks all for the advice, I ended up buying it for £220 with a bit of haggling.

No the 1 sereis has an unresetable readable counter, the others may have it buried somewhere canon can get at but its not available to the consumer I dont think (an untamperable version).

http://olegkikin.com/shutterlife/canon_eos350d.htm may be of interest.

I'm at 2 years and 30k actuations, hopefully that means I can expect another 2 years of use out of mine!

Ah the old shutter life thingymabob - I always would take what they detail as being the assumed lifetime as being on the low end of the scale for the majority of their shutters, as they have to set what is seen as an "achievable" lifetime after all...

To put this into perspective my old 20d last year alone at only the BTCC events took over 50,000 images across the 10 weekends, and add another 200k or so images shot at WRC/Drifting/Shoots/Other Events etc and in one year I racked up 1/4 million on this camera alone (not to mention the other cameras), and then there's around 100k more from the year previous on it at shoots and events...so with the expected life of a 20d shutter being 100k I've already blown that clean out of the water with well over 3 times their suggested lifetime...probably more like 4 times now without looking into how much I've shot this year on it...

Bottom line is look after your kit and it will look after you smile

This is the Canon refurb shop on Ebay. Check out the prices their warranted refurbs are going for:

http://feedback.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFe...

Canon Outlet:Digital EOS 400D Black 18-55 (Refurbished) (#280188200182) £285.00
Canon: Digital EOS 400D Black - Body Only (Refurbished) (#280187117725) £272.00
Canon Outlet:Digital EOS 400D Black 18-55 (Refurbished) (#280187331025) £271.00
Canon: Digital EOS 400D Black - Body Only (Refurbished) (#280186204503) £269.01

Canon Outlet: Digital 350D Silver + 18-55 (Refurbished) (#280187761417) £183.13
Canon Outlet: Digital 350D Silver + 18-55 (Refurbished) (#280187090628) £193.87

Since November these prices have really started to come down. Alas 5Ds are going pretty much for new retail price.

Canon Outlet: Digital EOS 5D + EF 24-105(Refurbished) (#280184958811) £1,420.00
Canon Outlet: Digital EOS 5D (Body Only) - Refurbished (#280183857126) £822.03
Canon Outlet: Digital EOS 5D + EF 24-105(Refurbished) (#280184468273) £1,309.99

Be aware though, despite them being the official (so they say anyway - and have thousands of sales which probably prove it) their user feedback isn't exactly perfect!

I would suggest that the vast majority of these cameras have never been out of the box or seen daylight since manufactured.

Good news.....I bought a 350D kit to go with my 400D for well under £200 through eBay

Bad news....it was brand new (no doubt at all, fully sealed in the box, serial numbers match. However it's front focusing slightly.

Now I can get my money back, but this is not uncommon with these cameras and I have simply sent it to Canon to have it re-calibrated.

I have several friends who have bought through eBay with no problems at all, looks like I got the .01%!

Bit of a pain, but I'm happy.
