S Series steering rack (what is it?)

Strange question - can anyone tell me what the S-Series steering rack originally comes from?

The company that produced it went bust just after the S ceased production. Use the Search function for more info.

I know from having to get some work done on my previous S that it is definitely from the Chevette

Hmm, that's interesting I have a Chevette rack in the garage.

Sadly, it is attached to a Sylva at the moment.

I just wondered if it was the same as the M as my father rebuilt his a while back and came up with some mods to much improve the steering (can't remeber the details - I think it was friction reduction). I was just curious as to whether the same could be applied to an S.

Quite a few low-production/kit cars of the 80's & 90's used the "Shove-it" rack (I think the reliant SS1 has it too), but it was modified for use in TVR S series (don't know what the mods are).

I've done quite a bit of research into the steering rack, as mine is knackered (play in it).

The main rack body and innards are chevette - but the track rods are ford.
Which ford I don't know. Also be aware there are 2 types of Chevette rack, only one fits.
The chevette track rods are not long enough for the TVR, and they have a different thread for the track rod end.
I have a reconditioned chevette rack in the garage that I am hoping to use as the basis of my rack rebuild, but it hasn't got much further yet.

I had mine refurbished a while ago when it failed the MOT for excessive wear. It was fine afterwards, and I would recommend this option over a replacement.

If you can get me the Ford part number I should be able to tell you what it came from...

(BTW Triumph sounds about right for the M, think quite a lot of other stuff was. I suppose it was a bit unlikey with 15 years seperating them!)
