Whilst changing gear I've noticed a strange sound, almost like a crunching sound though its not mechanical coming through the clutch pedal.

When braking the sound is heard as though the gearbox, exhaust seems to be moving forward under stress. I know it sounds vague but it seems to be getting worse.

The N/S manifold has recently been off for some welding and the mechanic who serviced it recently rekons he had the box out too whilst trying to fix a broken speedo gear though I rekon he never touched it as the repair was unsuccessful.

The sound only happens when the car is being jiggled about on bumpy side street.

Any ideas?

If he took the box out, he would either have to take the engine and box out as a whole, or move the engine forward to get the box out from underneath. If things are moving has he forgotten to put the nuts on the engine mounts? (assume you have v8).
Why would he take the box out to do the speedo drive?
If its the driven gear it pulls out, and if its the driver, you just need to pull the rear flange, seal and bearing off to get to the driving gear.

You sure he's a mechanic??

Thanx so far...the sound is coming from the transmission tunnel or feels as though it is. Are there any mounts or fixings there?

As for the speedo, where abouts does it connect with the box? I'll have a look myself and see if I can fix it.

Been looking at some of your other posts Andrew... seems like you ain't having much luck! Bloody TVRs...
Anyway: as far as the gearbox is concerned, there are two big rubber mounts under the rear end of the box that engage with slotted brackets on the chassis. I had my box out last year and can confirm they were a bit of a git to engage correctly. On my car the gearbox oil had been leaking, which had turned the mountings to a texture rather like liver. The box bounced around quite merrily! As it happened, we use exactly the right size rubbers on some equipment at work, so it wasn't a problem for me...
The noise could also be the exhaust rubbing on the chassis: on my car you can just about get a fag paper between them in places!
Otherwise, it may even be the bodyshell flexing that you can hear. There are supposed to be bits of rubber between the shell and the chassis, but I've seen more than one car where these are conspicuous by their absence. I get some odd noises that I can also feel through the clutch pedal as I enter my driveway; I've always put it down to things flexing as the car goes into a dip in the drive (nothing's grounding out).
