XBOX & linux

As I can't afford a PS3 yet but really fancy a DIVX player in the living room, I have come across the idea of getting a original XBOX and installing Linux on there.

Anybody done this before?

Anybody got an old Xbox they don't want?

Why not get a 360 instead? Plays Divx and does hidef properly.

I'm looking into doing this myself.
It seems to be able to play just about any digital format ever conceived!
Just waiting for the mod chip suppliers to restock...

You don't need a modchip, google "xbox softmod"

I've done it and it is absolutely brilliant, i recommend it 100%.

I can honestly say it makes a much better media center than my 360, the only downsides are that it struggles to do 1080HD and wireless adaptors are hard to come by.

But it really will play absolutely anything, it will even play stuff that my PC won't!

And it is cheap as chips, an old xbox is about £20 now (if you don't have one already), and all you need to softmod it is an action replay which i bought for £3 and a copy of one of a list of games (mech assault, splinter cell and something else). Budget £30 if you have to buy the lot and you won't go far wrong and it does far far more than any DVD player!

I know but for various reasons I've decided to go with the chip. I've got everything I need to soft mod except the game but I like the idea of flicking a switch and reverting to the original bios etc.

007 Agent under fire is the third title. Wikipedia gives details. You have to get the correct version!

It took some finding but I think this is what you need once you've got your box modded -> .

If you softmod it correctly then one button boots into the new os, the other boots into the MS live section of the original dashboard. I've had no problems what so ever on live or anywhere else using my softmodded box, but it is your choice at the end of the day.

I chipped my xbox about a year ago, stuck xbmc on it and have been using it happily ever since. However, a new Xbox 360 at christmas means the old one is at a bit of a loose end. Anyone interested?

Yes I'm looking at XBMC, it looks quite good. Can't see the point in getting a Divx dvd player as I don't fancy keep burning something to disc to watch it once.

I had a XBOX 360 which is completely bricked after trying to fix it from 3RLOD, it was already modded so couldn't send it back, worked for a while post fixing before giving up completely

Another vote for XBMC here, it might be worth picking up a IR controller too, i think the 360 media player controller is compatible too [infact any IR controller is if you happen to know the button codes and have the time to edit a configuration file].

Based in Bedford. I have got four controllers, the ir sensor and remote and about 7-8 games. This is all from memory so would have to check. Was looking for about £50 for the lot?
