HELP! Need someone with a trailer close to Caterham, Surrey!
Discussion
Hi, this is a bit of a plea really. My Chim is currently stuck at Abbey Motorsport in Oxted having had a strange problem occur with the new Emerald ECU so it now won't run. I need to get it to Emerald in Norfolk asap but can't really afford the extra £300 quid right now to get it moved by a private company.
So if anyone has a trailer, or means to move it i'd gladly pay for fuel and time to get it either straight to Emerald (about 2h on the motorway) or just back to my house in Caterham (about 10 minutes away) so I can at least keep it in the garage until I can find a way of getting it up there...
Thanks in advance, my mob is 07739814664

Can't emerald loan you a ECU with a basic set-up so you can drive there.
Or you can borrow mine, as not in car yet.
Also remember with a trailer your going to have to double the time. so its more like 3 hours.
I've left you a phone message.

Hi Leigh, sorry posted on the Chim forum! Yeah in the end it turned out to be rubbish plugs and an intermittent problem with a couple of wires going to one of the coils! Its running now but running too rich (should be 14.5-7 but is currently hanging around 13.1-3) which results in me getting a bit gassed even with the garage door wide open and the exhausts pointing out! The idle is also a little dodgy, I can get it to come down to around 850 but the whole car seems to rock when it goes this low so i've pegged it a little higher where its smoother (around 1.5k for now). Not sure how to fix this so i'll leave it to the RR guy on Weds morning. It does drive though despite being down on power so I won't need a trailer any more

Nick - I thought it might be the coil connectors.
I had just read Dave Walkers column in January's PPC
magazine and he said he had a car in and found exactly the same problem..
The wires to my coil packs (in the shed
) are very thin .. so it's always going to be harder to get a good joint (IMHO) than with a bigger wire.
Anyone else think it's about time we have a category for Engine Management Systems (under Technical) .. with a Wiki for FQA's and install tips.

would be handy to have a Engine Management Systems, I'm sure we would talk emerald to post on it, as they don't see to have a forum on there site. be some good PR for them also.
P.s. nick did you get the air temp to work.
Also now you the expert you can help me install mine when I ready
P.s.s
What plus did you use in the end.
Thanks

Yeah, it is quite tricky to get a good joint due to the pins you need to attach. I tried crimping them with a bit of solder before but somehow this didn't provide a very good joint. So I took all the pins out and crimped them in again but much tighter this time with a hell of a lot of solder on so they should never be able to move...
I got the air temp by fiddling with this connection as well. The pins had not seated in the connector very well so when I plugged it in, the pins were pushed back up. I solved it by prying the pins open a bit and gluing them in and it seems to work fine now.
I used BPR6ES plugs in the end just to get it running, i'll head off to Tim's tommorrow to get some B7's before it goes on the rollers on Weds though. Not sure this is totally necessary but id rather have it mapped in its final state..
Not sure i'm much of an expert but yeah i'd be happy to help if you need it! Also I definately agree we should have an ECU forum so we don't have to continue clogging the normal ones!

I just used one of those plier type ones with the cutters at the end and a pair of needle nose pliers from my auto-electric toolkit. It seemed to work ok but they aren't as easy to secure as normal bullet connectors I often use...
I haven't actually been to any surrey meets before, the only thing i've done with the Surrey lot was a wedding run this summer! This is because I spend a lot of time in Birmingham so will usually go on the odd meet or run with them as its pretty local to me. I seem to remember the Surrey lot meet quite a long way from me, can't remember where that was though!? Would be glad to bring it down to one though or alternatively i'll be at the pistonheads show and Virginia waters whenever that is, forget when it was last year..!
