Looking at bike to bike communications and as I don’t want to hear music or be interrupted by a mobile phone I have decided the simple PMR route is probably the most suitable.

There seems to be a very large choice on PMRs out there so can anyone point me towards the best buy / current favourite? I have no desire to spend fortunes but at the same time I don’t want to pick the cheapest and end up with crappy radios or poor quality kit.

I would probably prefer a decent rechargeable unit rather than hardwired into the bike as I race cars and could see the kit being used to talk to the pits when I race.

I am tempted by voice operated but I have heard varying opinions on ambient noise setting these to transmit in error. It seems that some equipment is more vulnerable than others – is that the quality of the mike in the lid or the noise suppression within the PMR? Or should I just put a PTT button on the bike / steering wheel?

Any advice gratefully received!

Autocom is good but it you only need it if you want to add your mobile / ipod / satnav to your PMR. I only want the PMR for speech so I will not need that bit.

Alan 456R seems to be a sensible compromise between spec / size and power – anyone tried one?

I have a Starcom (similar to a Audiocom but smaller) the speakers supplied fit very well inside a crash helmet this is connected to a Kenwood Protalk PMR, I use this on my motorbike.

VOX is a nightmare so PTT is the way to go.
