97 540 -Engine Question

Going to look at one of these tomorrow, am vaguely aware of an BMW changing the spec or generation of the '40 engines (may be wrong). Would this be a later one and are they all 4.4?

Any things to look/listen for?

My only previous Bimmer experience was an E12 M535, so not quite up to speed
