So do you want it back on the road cheap, or do you want to spend a fortune ?

If you want it cheap, just fix it.

What on earth could be wrong with a cam, that needs an entire engine to be replaced !!!!

I think you need to find out whats wrong first. Because it you are quoting the RAC guy verbatim....he obviously isnt too smart around cars

As i say, it would need to be a major problem for it to be cheaper to change the engine.

Id like to know whats wrong with the old one first...it might be a very small problem.

When you start fitting totally different engines, you could run into wiring problems, all sorts. If doing this yourself, no big deal, as time is free.
But if you are paying someone...time is money.
Conversions are never cheap.

If its a new engine you need, id price all the options first.

"a cam problem" is quite a wide diagnosis. A snapped cambelt could easily cost more to repair than an engine swap.
