I hve a 1978 2 door Range rover 3.5 V8. The old four speed (which has overdrive) needs replacing. Can anyone tell me if any other LR gearbox goes straight in without needing different length driveshafts etc.
Option 2 is to get a mid '90s Disco and do a body swap, then I get a decent 3.9 and abs etc. I presume the dash would also have to be exchanged too....
Am I barking up the wrong tree... or just barking.
Help and advice gratefully received.

3 speed auto, 4 speed auto, LT77 and R380 mate up to an LT230 - I think the props should fit, bit if not it will be very easy to source new ones.
The LT230 high/low/difflock lever is quite high - you will need to cut out the top of your transmission tunnel or swap the tunnel for a later one.

Here's an LT230 fitted into the early transmission tunnel, i made a little box for it.

There is also the borg-warner transfer box which is similar, but i think the front prop would need to be slightly longer, as the front output is a couple of inches further back.
