A6 - Changing a Light Bulb....
Discussion
...shouldn't be that bl00min' difficult.
Rant, rant, rant.
How come an "Owners Manual" can cope with telling you the configuration of the fuses, but not which lightbulb you need? Eh?
And then they don't tell you anything more helpful than to get a "qualified mechanic" to do it!!
I've worked it out - Halfords, was even helpful by steering me away from the wrong kit (as promised by their website!!) - and it requires the removal of two bits of plastic. But if only I had known when I started I could have done the job in half an hour less than standing scratching my head over which bits to unscrew.
And I cannot find a Haynes Manual for an '03 A6 - is there an alternative to Haynes???

Anyway, unless it has gas discharge lamps a 2003 A6 needs bulb set 9 from Halfords, or the headlamp bulb (dipped) is a Philips H7 12v 55w 12972 or equivalent, and you don't need to waste time unscrewing the light assembly!
Not trying to hijack the thread or anything but as it happens my bulb has just gone and as it happens it is the drivers side and i was told that all the airbox has to come off ! Is it a big job changing the bulb on a 2000 A6 and what sort of bulb are they ?? If i went to halford would they tell me which one i needed ?? And how much might i have to pay ??
Well, if it's like mine, you'll be removing a part of the air intake on the drivers' side to get to the back of the headlamp unit - otherwise the same experience that I had (on the nearside). I only wish it was clearly documented somewhere. Not difficult, just would be easier if documented!

They managed to tell me which one successfully from their own computer and an immediate doubt that the one I had originaly selected was correct, however, on their website it would have led me to another bulb kit - so be warned. I was pleasantly surprised how helpful they were, in-store, by the time someone actually served me.Their spare bulb kit #9 was precisely £12.99 - and obviously I now have spare indicator, position and brake lights et cetera.
Ive sorted it, Mine is kit 18 and was £15.99 and i got several spare bulbs so was well worth it.. I managed to do it from start to finish in just over 10 mins. I was expecting it to be a right fiddly job. I dont know if the cars after 2000 are different as my mate has an A4 on 2001 and he said fitting them xenon bulbs were a big nightmare.. I was going to change the rear fog light bulb
How do you get to it
I am totaly baffled

I have just done this on my 1998 A6 (2.8 engine). Right hand side is a bit more tricky as the air intake has to come off. Easy though as it is documented in the owners manual.
Unscrew the 2 screws holding the air intake on, remove air intake.
Take cover off light unit.
Remove spring clip and take bulb out.
Take bulb to Halfords and get identical bulb (£5.99 on its own).
Refit.
