Rumours have been leaked out this will appear at the Detroit motor show as a concept:

How much extra weight does the V12 TDi add over the V8 FSI? Wonder if they'll actually manage to sell many of them...

I cant see it selling many. I would think most people that can afford one will want the speed power and sound of a petrol engine. I would think so anyway..

If it went ahead, Audi would be building a showcase diesel. I doubt that economy would be given much of a mention.

Simply, it would have to the the fastest outright model in the range using never-seen-before tech.

Regards weight, I'm no engineer but I do hear that the lastest M3 4ltr V8 weighs less than the outgoing straight six. Audi has the capability to shed the pounds if the price was right I'm sure.

I got Clarksons supercar showdown video for christmas, and he made an interesting comment when waxing lyrical about the R8. "It hasn't got the V10 like the Lambo, and never will have"

AFAIK it won't have - the V10 R8 in development and testing uses the RS6 V10, which is "different" to the Lambo V10...
The Lambo V10 and Audi 4.2 V8 (as found in the S4) are directly related.
The Audi 4.2 V8 as found in the RS4 and R8 is a "different" unit (revs much higher), and the RS6 and R8 V10 is based on this.

How different they really are I don't know!

But it is worth noting that in a recent interview the boss man at Ecurie 25 went on record as saying he had orders placed with Audi for both V10 & convertable versions of the R8

And I thought it was reasonably well understood that the V10 R8 was confirmed for production from late-08/early-09 some time late last year?

I've heard absolutely nothing relating to a convertible version though...mind you: that doesn't stop anyone placing a speculative order does it!

Must admit that if I had the money i'd buy a Diesel V10 R8 - my wife thinks that Diesels are practical cars!

V10 Unofficially yes officially no. Also apparently audi are developing an all new v10 as they were having issues with cooling of the rs6 version derivitives

Thats the realy clincher isn't it - would Audi really have invested the huge amount of money they have in the deisel Le Mans assult if there was no marketing spin-off...?

There has got to be a plan to launch the very high performance deisel at some point - whether in the R8 or otherwise!

How much of a success has the A4 cabriolet diesel been, I honestly haven't got a clue and tend not to notice, but i do remember a few years ago when they launched it they made a big noise about it being the worlds first mass produced diesel convertable and that they could do it now because the new engines were so clean and quiet. If it's been a good seller they might be about to try a similar marketing pitch for the worlds first mass produced diesel sports car (assuming it is the first of course and some smart arse isn't about to come along and point out an obscure 1926 bugatti or something wink)

Just to clarify, there is definately a V10 engined R8 en-route but it will use an Audi engine and not the V10 from the current Gallardo.
The R8 TDi is also very likely to go into production. Seems Audi want to be the first to release a Diesel Supercar. Not sure if too many other manufacturers will follow, but they will of course look to capitalise on the R10 Le Mans Racer.
There's also a Diesel version of the TT coming later this year, so Audi are keen to try and convert as many of us as they can!!

Here's a couple of official pictures of the R8 V12 TDi concept...

Personally I think they have tried too hard with this one. The word "Subtle" seems to have been forgotton.
