BMW Business CD Head Unit - Help needed

My E46 compact's business head unit started playing up recently, constantly trying to eject the CD by 'clicking' a lot. Initially, it would last a couple of seconds, but it got worse and worse over time.
In a recent fit of frustration, thursting another CD in to try and provoke the bloody thing to stop clicking, the unit shutdown altogether. There's no power to the lighting, clock, unit or anything it seems.
I'm guess it think's I'm a vandal and have attacked it and has gone off to call Esther or something.
Can anyone shed any light on any potential fix or is it time to invest in something new (if so, any suggestions)?
