I used to take photos with an Olympus C70, a 'good' point and shoot that also did raw files. I've happily been playing with photoshop and the ORF (Olympus Raw File) raw files it produces using adobe bridge to open them.

I upgraded to my first dSLR, an Olympus E510 primarily because of the 4/3rds system it has. It also produces ORF raw files but adobe bridge and photoshop won't open them/doesn't recognise them. Instead I have to use the Olympus Master software to open and manipulate the files or turn them into jpegs which defeats the purpose really. The jpegs the E510 produces can be opened by adobe

Can anyone help me why this should be and how I can fix something? I've used the same memory card back to back, so it's something to do with the files. I just don't get why an ORF file produced by one camera works and an ORF file produced by the other does not.

Gracias

Go to Adobe.com and download (for free) the files dedicated to your camera biggrin

De nada.

An ORF file is just a wrapper round the sensor data. Imagine it like this: your ORF file is like the newspaper round your chip supper. You like chips but your cat likes fish heads. Wrapped up the look the same, but you'd not eat the fish heads would you? Well your two cameras have different sensors so your software needs updating to understand the new sensor data. Try getting an update to Adobe Camera Raw from Adobe's website. Unfortunately you may need a newer version of Photoshop for the latest update...

Thank you. Thats very helpful

I have CS2 so hopefully the downloads should still be available. I went to Hawaii over the Christmas break and have about 300 raw files so I was despairing a little.

Crap it

My camera is supported on CS3. The downloaded plug-in works fine for adobe bridge but I still can't open it in CS2

And it's 500 photos

I least the upgrade costs only $199 from the US site rather that the GBP163.32 from the UK since I'm based in US now, so not quite so painful.

You can dowload Camera Raw (latest is version 4.3) with DNG convertor from the Adobe site which should let you open your Raw files with your vesion of PS. I only have the original CS and have it working that way with files from my Nikon D40. It downloads a convertor to your desktop which copies your Raw files to Adobe DNG files which your version of PS can deal with.

I found that my G9 wasn't supported by CS2 so had to upgrade to CS3. I think Adobe must have stopped supporting CS2 before the G9 came out.

Support for the D40x was added from Camera Raw 4.1 onwards so if you download the latest version and follow the instructions to update your plug-in you will be able to open Raw files in CS3.
