I know the subject of Exhausts has been covered many times however my enquiry is quite specific:

I previously had the lotus stage 2 exhaust on my 111R, at first it was great but after a while I felt it a little too loud (confirmed by the fact it would not get through the noise tests at some of the more discerning tracks in the midlands and south east). It was not just the loudness I developed an issue with, I also thought the note to be a little try hard - by this I mean it had a touch of the escort XR3i bean can exhaust about it, trying to make a small engine sound much larger but not quite getting it right.

I've since upgraded the car to a PP Exige S and am looking to uprate the standard exhaust. From what I can see Larini and 2Bular seem popular options.

Is there anyone here who has owned a toyota engined S2 car (particularly the Exige S) and had experience with both the lotus stage 2 and then either a Larini or 2Bular or both? If so what was your opinion? If not then general comments would also be interesting, especially if you've been in the presence of cars with the different options fitted and have been able therefore to compare/form a first hand opinion.

Thanks in advance.

IIRC Gooby had a Lotus Sport one, and now has a 2bular.

Be careful here Doug,

Was in the same position ourselves like you we brought new (nearly) so because of warranty issues brought the official Lotus pipe sound's fantastic and the overrun is out of this world. I'm sure a dealer or someone must have one fitted for you to listen to. Exige S does sound a fair bit different from the non s/c car and the sport's pipe does drown out the s/c wine

I'm in the same position Doug. I like the Larini Sport SE but worried the noise will be too annoying for me and the problem of track day noise levels.

The Lotus exhaust is a Stage 2 only I believe so liable to be as loud as the 2bular and Larini I suspect. Interested to hear peoples views.

I'm going to add to the "I have an Exige S and not sure what to do with the exhaust" club.

Really in 2 minds about 2bular vs Larini vs Lotus. I had a Larini on my old S2 111S (rover engined car) and it was perfect.

Welcome to the club Tony. I would love to hear a car fitted with any of the 3 main options.

I do recall a guy on here (who no longer has his car) called Joe-Exige-S (it was a greay one I believe) had a 2bular and he absolutely loved it. I think it was the mad-spec one so very high noise, but he had nothing but praise for the exhaust.

A key thing to note; Larini do NOT have an exhaust specific for the supercharged exige. They only have one for the n/a Exige. I phoned them up and enquired as it didn't differentiate on their site and they told me as above. They're in development and, indeed, are looking for a car to do the development on (which the offered me) but I declined; worried about what would happen to the car and being as particular as I am (as kind as the offer was).

So, the sensible side of me is going to go with a 2bular average-noise exhaust, but that Larini on my old 111S was so perfect it is a difficult choice. We need some video clips biggrin

I drove Joe's car at Westover. They had it as a demo car. It was rediculously loud, like anything over 4k revs you couldn't even speak to your passenger. I think it was decatted and one of the small 2bular boxes.

Oh blimey I certainly don't want something where you can't speak to the passenger!

I think we're after similar things Kev.

There have been sound clips and things on the 2bular website...I'll hunt them out again biggrin

IIRC Joe's Exige S wasnt decatted, only a 4.75" Dia Ultra. I think with a decat too it would be unbearable.

Also to note chaps im in the same camp regarding exhausts, 2bular or official? Had my Exige S nearly 3 months and ive lost count how many times ive changed my mind. I want something fairly loud but still beable to drive on motorways without having my ear bent too much of the missus. biggrin

I want subtle, but stil be able to hear the sounds system and speak to the passenger. Joe's car was crazy. You felt like you were just about to get arrested for breach of the peace....

I'll be honest, if your using your car for everyday use the Lotus pipe will be to loud. I can just about here the MP3 player if I keep the rev's down

I have an S2 Exige 190 with a Lotus Stage 1 exhaust fitted. I dont know how the non S sounds compared to the S, but logic suggests the presence of a supercharger shouldnt alter the exhaust note too much. I love the sound of my car, its quiet enough whilst still sounding fruity around town, but when it gets hot and you start pushing on it sounds fantastic. The only downside is that at motorway speeds conversations have to be made at an almost shouting level! However I dont have the touring pack so I have a definate lack of sound proofing, and I think the majority of the noise on the motorway is tyrenoise.

Iv not heard the car from outside since Iv been the only person to drive it but everyone I know has commented on how good the car sounds. cool

Gooby does have a much quieter 2Bular than Joes ever was. What I can say about both, having folowed both cars on numerous occasions, is that whilst Joes sounds truely amazing it is extremely loud. Gooby's is nice and sedate whilst cruising, however has an excellent note and volume under load.
Obviously all of this sort of thing is subjective, but as and when I get round to replacing my exhaust, 2Bular will be my choice, the decision is just about volume. It certainly wont be as loud as Joes, but I may go for something slightly more than Gooby's. (That is if I ever do get round to it)

If I went 2bular I would go for the biggest 8" silencer. I like the twin exit Larini SE through the grilles though and 2bular don't list a twin exit one.

Essentially Jim at 2bular will build you any exhaust you like, hence Joe's exhuberant one. I believe Gooby and most with a non-SC toyota have the 7 inch, because Jim feels that 7 inch diameters provide enough sound deadening to get through the noise regs at most UK tracks in those cars. I think he typically recommends 8 inches for SC cars, which, presumably run a bit more induction noise.

Build quality on Jim's products is really good and if you explain what you are looking for he will come up with a recommendation based on your requirements, so I'd have a chat with him and see how you feel with his recommendation.

Oh and with regard to warranty issues, I know of one non-SC yota car which had a cracked exhaust manifold replaced under waranty even though it well worn 2bular back box etc... so I wouldn't get TOO hung up on waranty issues.

I have a 2Bular, it is a gobsmacking zorst. First thing you notice is the build quality. These things are incredible. They are TiG welded by hand. Those of you who know a little about welding will understand how difficult it is to TiG weld with presision, but it is the best method of construction.
Next - it is sooo light, the lotus supplied ones are incredibly heavy.

You can specify what you want. I like the design of the stage 2 tips which exit flush with the diffuser, SimonK has the same zorst which extends almost to the number plate. You specify what you want. I need to be able to get on tracks so the requirement was to be under 98db. No problem. The zorst cruises nicely but under load has a throaty roar with some delicious pops and bangs on the over run

Joe had an ultra on his 'zige S. This thing was so loud we could sit on my patio and hear him from about a mile away, but crikey, it was nice. There are some videos of it on my profile.

I have had a standard lotus zorst which was un inspiring, I then got a stage 1. This sounded good, a little quieter than the 2bular but started to fall apart after 14 months (warranty is 12 months...). Just1 has a stage 2 and that isnt much louder but mine is track legal. I have heard larini's and they are very good, build quality is not 2bular but neither is the price.

Speedyellow has a custom 2bular on his 240R, and he loves it, Joe adored the ultra, in fact I have never heard a bad word about 2bular, Shangani has just put one on his Honda conversion.

It is really simple, call Jim (owns 2bular) and tell him what you want and he will go and build it. His service is excelent, his product is superb.
