Just appalling.

I click on stuff and start to count, slowly.

Generally I get to around 44 before something happens. Not acceptable, even if it is free.

There was a thread recently about paying for PH, personally I would be quite happy to pay a few quid a month for the place to just respond in a timely manner to a simple mouse click.

I will check back every few weeks to see if things have improved, but in the meantime, bye!

What is video.flashtalking.com?

Apparently I'm transferring data from there whilst trying to get to this page.

Performance hasn't been great for a few months now.

Its bloody slow thats for sure, like its running Norton Antivirus version X million with a full scan underway why simultaneously doing a full file data file transfer while simultaneously running a full backup whilst some twunt is sat at the console with every app under the sun open and running while some other twunt is using it as a quake server.

It is more concisely as you said "bloody awful".

Dismal isn't it,

I wouldn't hand over any Money myself, Warren thinks differently, thats his own take on PH value,
was against discussing the very idea in the First place,
if somebody was prepared to take if off Teds hands, thats up to them,
was expecting an upturn if anything and thats not happening...

It has been bloody awfull for the past couple of days and same as above, I thought it was me, but friends have complained to me also

Ive blocked the haymarket.ad thingy site which speeded it up a bit, but now its all back to being as slow as a slow thing weeping

Personally, once Im in a full time employment and in a stable position, I would be more than happy to subscribe for a couple of quids per month yes

I'm happy to agree here, performance is terrible, it's got to the point now where I'm not prepared to wait and anyone monitoring my logins will notice I'm not coming back as often.

Pistonheads, I would not pay for access to your site, unless you took away your advertising. You can't have both, paying leads and paying click through.

Sort it out because quite bluntly if you continue to provide a poor experience for your members they will walk away and then, when you come to sell your advertising slots to people and they ask what rate your membership is increasing and it's actually on the down, you'll have problems.

Performance always used to be pretty dire... then I started blocking all of the ads and things picked up for a while. Now, so far this year, things has been pretty awful again and there are no ad servers in the mix to blame.

Would I pay for PH? Not a chance; Not as it is. They would have to drop all on site advertising and all pages would have to load, completely, in less than 3 seconds. As has been mentioned, you couldn't have paying customers putting up with crap adverts.

Further, I feel that since the Haymarket takeover there is a certain amount of disingenuous nature crept in.

I am sure that when the PH show was first pitched here it was PH show includes Autosport admission, but not the other way round, and dedicated PH parking. It was pitched with a certain amount of exclusivity to it. In reality it has turned out that it's a simple joint show and there is mention of PH parking. Also, people buying the £28 tickets are getting BOGOF deals whilst those of us that have paid for the more expensive tickets get no such offer. Fair? I think not.

Finally, I see overmoderation and inconsistent application of moderation driving some of the old lags away and a rather greater presence of the Max Power element than I like.

As they say, "Things ain't what they used to be".

Maybe Ted got out at the right time.

I agree that performance is once again below acceptable. I thought it was my internet link but PH is the worst culprit. For nearly a year it was struggling, with a recent improvement, but it's back down there again. A simple click on "reply" or on a thread can take a minute to produce a result. It reminds me of doing a yahoo search when it first started by a couple of kids at a US university 15 years ago frown

I wish people would stop talking about subs though, if enough people say they would do it, Haymarket will implement it. I wouldn't pay, I'd just find something more constructive to do with my time.

Whatever you've done this morning, it's flying! I'm guessing you've turned off some advertising because I don't see the threads peppered with the normal stuff!

yes That is slowing pages down for me too, usually on the 3 advert halfway down the page. The page will load and display up to the ad, then hang for up to a minute without loading either the advert or the rest of the page. A couple of refreshes is usually needed to get it to load.

hehe Wonder if Xenocide's post will get pulled..?

I suspect he has the nail squarely hit though, the other 'nightly' sites I haunt seem to balance ads and performance OK, but they don't have the volume of
neon-lit newbies that we see. everyone I think likes the dynamic aspect here,
its what keeps us coming back,
but that coupled with access problems, is a pain.

The "hosts" file overrides the normal DNS lookup that happens when your browser looks up the IP address for a URL. So instead of the browser getting a connection to the ad server, it gets a connection to 0.0.0.0 where nothing exists, so the ads don't load.

Easier to install Adblock Plus IMHO.

I have to admit I'm slightly bemused by the slow performance. OK, so PH sees quite a bit of traffic but surely a combination of multi level caching, query profiling and general tuning could resolve many of the performance foibles? Denis have had their hands on the site for a little while now. chop chop.

In fact, surely the sensible thing to do would be to turn the PH performance optimisation into an open source project using the PH community. How many web & technical people are on here - quite a few I reckon, many of whom would probably offer some of their time.
