Hi, could someone give me a ballpark idea of costs for 500-1000 CD's with our company brochure (PDF pages etc), printed face to the CD and a reasonable wallet to put the CD into.
Thanks.

Thats what we do.

The exact cost will depend on the amount of colour/ink on the CD face.

We can print on either silver or white CDs whichever is more applicable to the artwork design. A CD with a small amount of text and a small logo looks better on silver, and a more colourful design just looks more colourful on a white CD.

Turnaround time we could do them in 48 hours.

Exact cost would depend as above and whether you are looking for 500 or 1000 as we can obviously offer a lower price for 1000.

Feel free to PM we with an idea of the kind of artowrk design you are looking for and I can knock you up an exact quote with of course a PH discount!

Thats pretty decent!

Will your design work well in two colour? Ill have to rejig our prices a bit, but as long as the design is not too large we could do full colour - ie as many colours as you want a little under that (but not much) including the special PHers discount. wink

Justin - you might do well to put your company URL in your profile. I sometimes need quotes for that kind of work and sending PMs doesn't seem quite right - plus I have to find a post...

Just done so!

Any type of music recording/editing and CD/DVD duplication we are good for.

(But then I may be slightly biased!) smile

Did I PM you a while ago about some video type quotes? I dont think PMing and my hotmail account communicate well together!

Whilst of course you can say I am biased as you could come to me to get them printed, I would actually advise against that particular unit.

With the smaller 'prosumer' units the cost per disk and the 'faffyness' factor is quite large. Not only will you have to reload a 50 CD unit quite a few times to get your order done.

What a lot of people dont realise is like the new batch of PC printers, the printer is cheap but the cartridges are more expensive. Although they are almost identical to standard cartridges, for example Microboards use HP systems. However the cartridges have a chip on so you can only use the Microboards ones. At £40 a pop.

The other factor is that as well as that outlay you need a reasonably fast PC to run it - and to keep it stable you need to run just the operating system and the writing software.

I have had two Microboards units and ended up getting rid of both. They all have gravity fed CD loading systems which seem to jam with many types of disc. Sometimes you would get 50 done in a row, sometimes you would have to unjam it a few times to get 50 done.

If it is more cost effective to buy a unit, go for a Primera. They all have robotic arms picking up the discs. The units we have are £6000 plus each and do 400 discs at a time. However, I have also had the Bravo Pro units and they were great - and in fact still have one as a back up - I think their pro-sumer units should be about the same price as that Microboards. In my experience they beat the Microboards for stability anyday.

Those are the ones. The Bravo Pro that I have is identical to that apart from the fact that it has two drives instead of one so works at twice the speed. If speed is not an issue the Primera machines are great.

However, I would recommend running it from a Mac. Stability of it on Windows was a bit hit and miss. The software used to freeze during writing a disc and you would have to restart the whole thing and waste the discs that were half writing and half printing.

I think it was something to do with the fast that it is a USB interface feeding the data. USB pulls a lot of system resources, and a momentary hang will freeze the system. Firewire units are better as they use less system resources and the interface is more suited to continuous supply of data rather than a 'burst' which USB seems to be better for. That said of course Firewire units seem to be more expensive, apart from the Microboards ones which I found dire, spending weeks trying to function properly.

That said, if you are only going to use the thing twice a year, I suppose you could live with this for the convenience of having the machine there, its just whether it is worth the cost and will pay back for itself.

I have tried a couple of refill sets and got limited results. They will work, but something between the print head in the cartridge starting to wear and the fact that the sponge that holds the ink starts to dry out, and overfilling the cartridge floods the head made that the discs didn't look too great, either too much ink meaning that they smudge or too little ink meaning that the print looks like there are horizontal bands on it.

If I was messing about or for my own discs I would put up with the quality, but I would never use a refill on a customer's disc.

You did, and I replied with devastating efficiency! I sent a follow-up but nothing came back so I filed it under 'estimates that don't happen' and moved on frown

If you're still interested it might be best to mail me from www.autograph.uk.com/About.htm . We live in hope!

Thats a stonking price for that - perfect for you.

You got it for less than £500, and there is about £350 of cartridges there alone!

Thats alright!

At least you are getting the job done in the long term, I am glad to help anyway! On the computing forum someone has helped me clean some data files which otherwise would have cost me a few hundred quid in wasted postage and stuff, so I guess it is karma!

If the ebay machine doesnt work, my offer still stands! smile

Seriously though, you should be OK, the Primera stuff is good. Glad you have that over the Microboards. My advice would be to run it on a PC with nothing else on it. Even if it is an old one, as long as it has USB 2.0 that is fine. Stuff like virus checkers and other gumpf on PCs seems to access the hard drive, and to burn good CDs you need an uninterrupted data stream. If you can spend another £20 on more RAM if the machine doesnt have much, that is a good economy too.

Another good economy is not to try burning at the fastest speed possible. Although discs are rated at 52X or whatever, that is just an approximate standard, at that speed you may have one in ten chance at least the disc will be a dud. Worse than that, between the hardware and software it has a habit of the disc is a dud because you have written too fast then it will freeze the whole system meaning you have two wasted discs and a restart to do.

What you will also find is if you are printing at the same time, if your disc is not full of data, even at 16X is will go faster then it can print the one before.

Also, the slower they are written, the more reliable the disc will be and the less likely it is to not work in someones drive. On the big units we have here, although they are 48x drives (or even maybe 52X) to be sure we don't write audio or data at faster than 8X.
