I'm trying to do a bit of research for the possible Barge trip this year. The original plan was to spend 3 days at the ring and 2 days having a blast round Europe. However, due to the 'Ring only being open 1 day out the week we planned to go, that kind of buggered that plan right up.

So, what i need is an idea of the best roads to drive on in europe. We'd be arriving on a Sunday and leaving on the Friday, and the 'ring is only open on the Wednesday, hence there would be a bit of backwards and forewards to try and fit it all in. I'd rather not have massive distances to travel to get to a destination. Can anybody give me an idea of distances/time to get from say the Alps to the 'Ring?

All suggestions welcome

Cheers

You can easily get from the French alps to the 'ring in an enjoyable day. I did this myself last year, using the roads on the french/swiss border, the Haut Jura, that sort of thing. I'd recommend staying in France as long as poss though, 'cos Germany definitely has more congestion.

You can include the Vosges too, of course. You could do a circular route from the Ring to Annecy, and from Annecy (which is a very nice town) you are simply spoilt for choice of great roads. Best roads in the world, possibly?

When are you going?

Details are here http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Don't actually know if it's going ahead or not as there hasn't been much interest, but i'm hoping to have a last ditch attempt to get confirmed numbers before the end of the month to allow us time to book ferry and hotels.

Just after some great driving roads that will occupy a few days, plus the 1 day at the 'Ring (if its open!!)

cheers for the advice biggrin

Stayed at the southern end of Lake Annecy last summer for a few days en-route from the 'Ring area onto the South of France. I concur with the great roads bit - worth driving up to the mountain cafe overlooking the lake - the view is superb......once the mornig cloud/mist clears
