Gotta TrafficMaster Trackstar fitted to my VXR. Had the same in my old beemer.
Fortunately i've never had to test its functionality, but these came recommended.

Hi, i may be biased but...

Cobra Trak systems are very reliable, good quality, and have a 3 year warranty.

They have a few options:

Trak-Q: Standard system, 24Hr monitoring, GPS & GSM locating, battery-back-up. This is same spec as Trackstar+.

Trak-Q Attivo: As above, but you have access to a secure webserver to view your cars location.

Trak-ADR: As Trak-Q, but has Automatic-Driver-Recognition cards to guard against key theft.

Trak-5: As Trak-ADR, but Thatcham Cat5 approved.

I'd go for the Trak-ADR.

Hello nice man Dave. Hope you're still in festive spirit. As an installer are you able to do your fellow Monaro friends a good discount? What are you talking for that ADR system? Don't forget we spend most of our dosh on petrol so don't have much left over for trackers.wink

Are you based in Hants as well?

I had a MetaSAT GPA 800 on my Monaro. It worked really well and still sends me text messages even thought the car is now a technical loss after a recent accident. The system is controlled from your mobile phone and sends you alerts if anything goes wrong such as low battery or exceeding the set speed limit. You can even immobilize the car if someone steals it. Imagine their surprise as it suddenly stops in the middle of nowhere!

Why would you want a tracker?

I've never had it make more than £50 on insurance and there's plenty of policies out there where it is not a requirement

Don`t a lot of the tracker systems have a Speed camera database inbuilt?

Not sure about others, but the Trackstar+ from TrafficMaster has the option for "safespeed".

This gives an audible warning when approaching fixed camera sites.

Its a cost option though, not sure how much.

But a £100 Road Angel does that....

If some w4nker took my car for a burn, would I really want it back? Clutch, gearbox etc probably knackered.

Ads & Demo Man,

I know what you mean regarding the whole "would i want it back" argument. With an average Joe Bloggs motor, i wouldn't bother.

But.

Most of the cars on this forum do not fall into the above category.

How many of the people on this forum searched high and low for the perfect car to buy, walking away from many less perfect examples before finding "the one". Would you find another as good if you suffered a total loss?

Many tracking systems identify theft within minutes now (esp the ADR systems), hardly enough time for the clutch and gearbox to get knackered by Jonny car theif.

This next bit is my experience only, but when i got quotes for insurance on my VXR8 the companies that didn't need a tracking system were sufficiently more expensive than the best quote that did require one. Offset this difference for as little as 3 years and the tracker is paid for.

I guess it depends on the insurance - I'm paying considerably less on my VXR8 than the amount I'd spend on a tracker.

I do see your point that if the cars worth is based on money and emotional attachment (I considered it for my old car that was cheaper than the VXR8) but for a generic car its maybe not the most cost efficient.

It's no coincidence that the guy who owns Tracker also owns an insurance company that insists on having a tracker fitted to cars valued over 30k+.
