I'd suggest trying some online insurers first.

If it's too expensive how about a Zetec-S, very similar looks, I would guess handling with slightly better ride with the 16" wheels, worth a look

Have a read of this if you haven't already: http://www.pistonheads.com/roadtests/doc.asp?c=47&...

I understood very little of that.

My mum had a Zetec S followed by an ST, both are great to drive, and the ST felt quite quick to me. This was a PH road test recently, and the conversation consisted of loads of people talking about how much better the Clio 182 and Skoda VRS are. Ignore it. The fiesta has a great chassis under it, and enough power to feel rapid on twisty roads. No it is not as fast as a 182, but I reckon it is far better to drive than a Skoda VRS even if it isn't much quicker. (but on public roads, where it isn't safe to push any of them to their limits, they would all be the same speed, give or take)

However, the ST is grp 13, the Zetec S grp 8. And whilst it is not as fast, it is lighter, a great little drive.

Hi, im 18 and have a fiesta ST which i am currently trying to sell, ive had it just over a year since i passed. Its a great car and you should definetly get one, my insurance is with admiral multicar, all my family have there cars under it and im on my dads insurance so it costs me £1700 which is'nt too bad i think.
My fiesta ST is black with full white stripes, quite a few extras on it, 56 reg, 14,000 miles.
£9,500 ono.

SO technically you're not earning your own no claims bonus and you're committing fraud! Hmmmmmm...

Admittedly a more insureable car would be a better option but loads of young drivers are doing it -its better than being uninsured surely? (although with a fine that's less than the premium.....idea

If you have told the insurers your dad is the main driver but in fact you are. If that is the case then yep-it's fraud! However, if you are down as the main driver and the premium was reduced because your dad is down as a named driver then your OK.

Or the previous shape Zetec-S. Peppy 1600 motor and Grp 8 insurance. Basically a Puma without the 1.7 motor as most of the underpinnings are carried across. Great chasssis and a bit cheaper for your budget.
