Game stuttered... Lost sound... DVD grinded.... Game crashed... Console allowed me to quit game but nothing except a black screen... Reset console... No discs recognised not even cds.

It turns out I was actually destined to walk some MoFo's dog sh1t all over the hall carpet instead tonight, which Ive just finaished cleaning up. See I didn't need a PS3!

Not a good evening. I may go to bed now...

Not good at all. Seems like a fairly common problem from that thread too.

Sony are sending me a new one. Arrives Monday.

Took two calls.

The first to a person who was very unhelpful who said I'd need to do a factory reset and a HD wipe and then ring back (not on your nellie) and then one 3 seconds later with a nice lady who immediatly volunteered a replacement.

Can you retain the HD with all your saved games etc?

Yeah I would think you can just swap the two out, pretty easy job, provided the HDD isn't part of the problem in the first place of course, but it doesn't sound like it is.

No, you whack a USB stick in, then you go to your saved games data, press the triangle button and it brings up a copy to media option.

Hope it works. Will try tonight. It took be ages to get to Supreme Commander on COD4.

Ok I lied.

I'm on my 3rd PS3 now. First one wouldn't stay on more than 3 minutes, but I managed to copy game data off before Sony came next day with a new one. 2nd one just died and wouldn't start - couldn't get the game data off.

Sony suggested taking the hard disk out and putting it in a friends PS3, but none of my friends were willing rolleyes so I just waited for the new one the next day and made the delivery driver wait while I swapped the drives. New PS3 just said 'New hardware, shall I format?' and no other option. Hence I lost all my game data frown

I've noticed on NfS Pro Street that you CAN'T copy the data to a memory card due to protection, so if I lose this one, I'm doomed!

Thats a right s****er. makes you wonder how accurate Sony's quoted 1% failure rate is, bet its closer to 5% in reality.

Keep us updated on how quickly its replaced, always handy to know just in case.

Just to add - My PS3 also died. After performing the update it would no longer read any discs. They came out to my house and brought me a brand new one the very next day.

So what happens if your 60gb model gets rooted? Will you get another 60gb as a replacement?

New PS3 arrived today as promised. Seems to be brand new. Installing updates now, then you can all kill me again on COD4.

1% is utter BS.

HDD faliure rates are at least 1%, more normaly seen to be 5% or even up to 13% annualy, and thats just one component of the PS3.
